The report explores the different ways in which Google has advanced search results giving the
recipient a quicker, effective result. Google is the worlds most popular search engine that has many
methods that will make any search you have a more precise result. However many users are
unaware about this and may use up precious time looking for something specific when all they need
to add is a couple of symbols.
Inverted commas (“______ _______”)
Inverted commas or more commonly known as speech marks are used to get a more effective
search result. This tool gives a smaller number of results compared to typing two or more words in
without inverted commas they are specific results. For instance when typing in two separate words
such as‘mars chocolate’ Johnson you will have a larger volume of unnecessary results that highlight
just on one word and are about different things when you are actually searching on information
about a product. But when typing in “mars chocolate” I received a better result with answers solely
about the product.
The example shown above shows another different company with the same name who are a pet
supplier which is not what I am searching for.
4
Define operator(define:)
This is a very popular tool people use on Google to search definitions online rather than looking in a
dictionary it is a quicker way to get a definition. On the search bar you would type (define:
obsequious) with no spacing in between.
This example above shows how Google have created a system that is easier to get the definition
without looking into links given below.
5
Automatic calculator
Automatic calculator is another useful tool, you can type your question or sum on the tool bar in
numbers or in words and it will automatically show you an answer. There is no need to type in the
‘calculator’ and then click on a link you can do it on the search bar. For example, I you could type
‘twelve plus fifty nine’ or ‘12+59.’
6
Google’s currency and metric converter
You could easily type in any query you have for currency exchange on the search toolbar to get an
instant answer about the conversion of money and a chart that shows the economy value of that
currency.
In the example shown I have asked for the conversion from pounds sterling into Japanese Yen’s. This
is the same for a metric converter so if someone types in 1200mm to cm Google will give you a
result of your answer at the top of your results.
7
Minus operator (-)
When searching for a product online like clothing your are often given results of retail companies
from US or Korea and so adding a minus sign after your search ( - US) will exclude any results and
web results from the US.
These examples show how I have searched for ‘Victoria sponge cake’ however I wanted to look at
more recipes which was not associated with BBC and so I used the minus sign and wrote ‘BBC’ to
eliminate any search results linked to BBC.
8
The examples listed above indicate that search results tools are effective and saves researchers time
by having lesser more relevant results making your Google search hasty and easier. I have explored
and explained operators that I found would be useful in an everyday search. I have covered how to
use a definition operator, money conversion, inverted commas to give specific results and the minus
operator. Which are effective and optimise the best search results while researching.
In conclusion I think that the advancement from basic searching and browsing through various link
and websites to get to the actual result may come to an end. As advance search is the new way to
search, the operators have enhanced searching results for the better.
