Deserts are defined as areas that receive less than 250 mm of rainfall per year. There are two main types of deserts - hot deserts found in tropical regions like the Sahara and cold deserts or tundra found in temperate regions like the Gobi. Vegetation in hot deserts is sparse and spaced far apart to cope with low rainfall through fleshy stems, swollen roots, small leaves and short life cycles. Vegetation in tundra is small, compact and close to the ground to withstand extreme cold and strong winds through short roots and life cycles during the short summer. Natural vegetation provides many benefits including being a natural resource, providing medicine, recreation, oxygen, rainfall, preventing soil erosion, and
