The Business
The company provides its institutional, retail and high net-worth
clients access to skilled investment professionals representing a broad
range of asset classes, including equities, fixed income, property and
alternative investments. With its principal place of business in London,
the firm is one of Europe’s largest investment managers, with over €98
bn assets under management and over 1000 employees in nearly 20
locations worldwide.
The Challenge
As a leading financial services company, the firm is committed to
building a secure work environment where information can be stored,
used and communicated safely without risk of financial loss, damage
to reputation, or regulatory penalties.
At the same time, as an SME, the firm was seeking a solution to secure
company information and access to data, while still keeping security
CapEx in check. The company had already implemented Microsoft RMS
across its 1,000 desktops and 300 laptops, and was seeking a solution
that would extend RMS functionality – cost-effectively leveraging their
infrastructure investment, improving data security and adding data
classification, all with minimal impact on workflow and productivity.
The company considered traditional DLP solutions, but were seeking a
more proactive approach from a service-oriented and forward-thinking
vendor, that would:
• Allow information resources to be labelled such that the
classification is clearly identifiable
• Allow for reclassification by the Information Owner once the
circumstances surrounding the original classification have changed
• Enable real-time monitoring of email communications
• Enable retroactive scanning and classification of existing files in
any format
• Log every change to the classification of files and emails

• increased user security
awareness across the
enterprise
• classificationofallsensitive
content – from documents
to emails
• powerful analytics tool for
actionable, real-time, real-
world insights on how data
is being used
• meet both regulatory and
management reporting
demands
BenefitsThe Solution
The Firm chose Secure Islands’ IQProtector (IQP) to extend and
enhance the organization’s monitoring and alert processes. IQP
enabled the Firm to augment security policy enforcement and
apply classification based on a pre-defined policy for all outbound
email and attachments – including those originating on mobile
devices or residing in the cloud.
Successful Implementation
Following the definition of the initial data classification parameters,
all newly-created files and documents are now classified based
on a centrally-managed corporate policy. Files that have not
been assigned a classification level by users, are considered to be
“Confidential” by default, ensuring that all information resources
are tagged and classified. In the next step, the Firm used IQP
Scanner to retroactively scan, classify, and tag their thousands of
existing files and documents as Restricted, Confidential, Internal,
or Public.
All outbound email is now fully monitored using IQP’s powerful
analytics tool. Attachments to outgoing messages automatically
receive the most sensitive classification, and users are required
to provide justification for each external message. For all
automatically-classified content, users have the option of re-
classifying – but Secure Islands’ IQP ensures that no content is
ignored or can slip through the cracks
The nexus of the company’s DLP program, IQProtector now
provides classification of all sensitive content – from documents
to emails, and everything in-between. Secure Islands’ approach
to implementation and rollout of IQProtector, the system’s
inherent stability, and its broad application compatibility markedly
contributed to the success of the project.
