Technology transfer is maximized by identifying external users and making knowledge available to them. An organization should maintain a detailed view of its knowledge portfolio, gather information on potential external applications and user communities, and enable easy browsing of the knowledge portfolio tailored to users' needs. A knowledge management system with a semantic structure can fulfill these conditions by classifying knowledge, applications, and users to facilitate technology transfer.

- 9. Summary Technology (or, more generally, knowledge) transfer is about identifying who needs your expertise in the outside world and making it available to them. In order to maximize opportunities, an organization should • Keep a detailed, comprehensive and up to date view of its knowledge portfolio. • Gather and store information on potential external applications and identify potential user communities. • Enable potential user communities to access and browse easily the knowledge portfolio, with search criteria based on users’ needs.
