  • #3: Students are connected with service and engagement opportunities on-campus, in the area surrounding Geneva, outside the local region and even internationally. These experiences are meant to help students develop citizenship skills such as leadership, self-awareness, and recognizing societal needs while making a material change that will help meet identified community needs

  • #5: Volunteering Roles – Day of Service examples A volunteer is someone who works unpaid for the main purpose of benefitting an individual or non-profit organization Short-term commitment with specific duties outlined – age-appropriate fit determined in advance No legal contract binds a volunteer to perform work and payments are provided Service-Learning placements Teaching strategy that faculty use to incorporate service into their courses…students earn academic credit for the learning and reflection, not for performing community service Robert Bringle and Julie Hatcher define service learning as “students (a) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs, and (b) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of curricular content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of personal values and civic responsibility" No pay is provided for the work performed and there are often additional materials provided by host site organizations to ensure clarity of mission, or student forms to demonstrate commitment Service-learning students should share information about what course they are enrolled in, and be clear about any hours expectation they may hope to earn (ie. 2-3 hours per week). Feedback is encouraged at the end of the semester, since learning is a key component of this ideally mutually beneficial relationship   Community Based Research Projects (CBR) CBR projects entail a semester long commitment devoted to the exploration of a vital community issue. Archived CBR projects completed by HWS students/partners/students available on our site Student(s) with exceptional initiative work collaboratively with a community partner + faculty sponsor. Responsibilities vary based upon the specific details within the proposal and will likely include independent research, data collection and analysis, literature review, weekly check-ins with community partner and faculty sponsor, and a concluding presentation or project to organizational stakeholders Community partners can connect through professors, staff, or email serve@hws.edu Often descriptions are shared with students to complete as an independent study (course credit) or share at the beginning of a course for small group projects facilitated by a professor Internships A formal work experience arrangement that is part of an academic commitment where the student hopes to gain experience in a particular field, occupation or industry Usually a short-term arrangement (ie. semester or summer) for approx. 15 hours per week for full academic credit (240 hours) or ½ academic credit for (120 hours) Provides opportunity for student(s) to acquire new or build upon skills (paid or unpaid, academic credit received if approved by faculty) Although ideally a mutually beneficial endeavor, the intern often gains a great deal with thoughtful supervision and feedback which can be a time intensive endeavor for supervisor.
  • #6: Experiential education is a process of learning through direct experience. https://teachingcommons.lakeheadu.ca/service-learning-101
  • #7: Common characteristics: positive, meaningful and real to the participants cooperative rather than competitive experiences; promotes teamwork and citizenship addresses complex problems in complex settings rather than simplified problems in isolation. engages problem-solving in the specific context of service activities and community challenges, rather than generalized or abstract concepts from a textbook
  • #10: The Finger Lakes Times (9/27/2018, page 7A) reported that the Geneva school district "is ranked in the top three of the most diverse school districts in the state with more than half of the city’s students classified as minorities. • #13: Pg 6 https://math.hws.edu/~mitchell/SuccessForGenevasChildren2023.pdf Geneva (city) median household income historically has been less than two-thirds that of Ontario County or New York State. In 2021, it rose to roughly 80% of the median county household income and 75% of the median state household income. Because income tends to rise with age (until retirement), the lower median income in Geneva may be explained in part by the earlier observation that the median age is lower in Geneva than in Ontario County or New York State.
