• To be able to reflect on people who are special to us.
Description of Main Activity Focus:
Based on Hinduism, children will create bracelets, sweets and presents for a person
who is special to them. They will reflect on why they are special to them with
links to the Hindu festival Raksha Bandhan (celebrates brotherhood and love).
Action points from previous lesson(s):
Children have already started studying Hinduism in class, looking at other festivals,
rights of passage, place of worship and the gods.
Resources:
• PowerPoint.
• Cello tape.
• Different colours of string.
• Sweet making ingredients.
• Teaching assistant.
• Candle.
Differentiation:
• Using a number of strings for the bracelet.
• Open questions - deepens the children's thinking, higher ability may give more
expanded answers.
Pace/Time Structure of the lesson Your role
10 Minutes
The topic of today is introduced - Raksha Bandhan
(celebrates brotherhood and love).
A video clip of explaining what happens within the
religion is shown. After watching, children Think, Pair,
Share about what it happening and why it happens.
The ideas are shared with the class and reinforced with
the teacher's conformation.
Play the clip.
Lead discussions.
Using PowerPoint reinforce the factual
side of the festival.
10 Minutes
Discuss is made about people who are special to us and
people we protect us and who we wish to protect.
Discussion about how this may link to the principles of
the Hindu festival of Raksha Bandhan.
Use open-ended questions to get
children to develop their thinking e.g.
"why do people protect us?".
75 Minutes
In tables there are different activities to do one table;
making a present, bracelet, and sweet.
Children are split into three groups.
The overall task is explained to the class - They will
make a bracelet, sweets and candle (present) for
someone how is special to them. This will then be taken
home to give to their person.
Whilst making their presents children should be thinking
about their special person/people.
Each group will go to a certain table with a TA how is
making a certain thing. After about 20 minutes each
group swap tables to make the next thing.
Explain the activities.
Be on the table which are making the
bracelets.
May need to demonstrate to children
how to make plaits.
Get children to consider the colours they
are using, does it represent the person.
Question children about who they are
choosing to give their gifts to.
Getting them to explain why they are
choosing them,
Q: If you could give it to more than
one person who would they be?
Q: What do you think is the
importance of receiving this gift?
Q: How would it make you feel?
10 Minutes Packing away
Getting children to pack away.
Ensuring the class is clean and tidy.
10 Minutes
At the end children discuss who they have made it for,
taking the pack of three home.
Children come sit on the carpet with their gifts and
thinking individually children have a final think about
who they are giving the gifts to and why. (children are
being reflective)
Some children can share with the whole class.
Gathering the children to sit on their
tables.
Get the children to think deeply about
their gifts.
Allow children to share their ideas.
Assessment opportunities
• Can children can make links to the religion aspects
of love and protection to their own experience
Success Criteria
• Can children make the 'thing' and explain who they
would give it to and why.
