- 3. LAUNCHED National Service Scheme (NSS) was launched on September 24, 1969 by the then Education Minister Dr. V.K. R.V. Rao. The scheme was launched in 37 universities with 40,000 NSS volunteers. NSS is a public service program conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

OBJECTIVES OF NSS 1 To understand the community in which the NSS volunteers work and to understand themselves in relation to their community 2 To identify the needs and problems of the community and involve themselves in problem-solving exercise 3 To utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems 4 To acquire leadership qualities and democratic values 5 To gain skills in mobilizing community participation 6 To practice national integration and social harmony.

- 7. NSS was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation. Therefore, 24 September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programmes and activities.
