Editor's Notes

  • #2: \n
  • #3: Sports have been in my life since i was 4 or 5 years old. Starting with tee ball and as i got older i started to wrestle and then play football. Up to my high school sports career iv had a bunch of coaches, mainly not that great of them. But a few can stand out to me that put the dedication and time into me to try and give me the opportunity for me to excel. Wrestling has been my main focus for awhile beacusee the coaches i had spent hundreds of hours trying to make me the best i could be and iv built a relationship with a few of them.\n
  • #4: This is Larry Mazzerelle one of my coaches that has been with me since i was 9. He coached me from 5th grade all the way up to the end of my high school career. We built a great relationship and he is one of the main reasons why i pushed myself through this brutal sports.\n
  • #5: A good coach for any sport should have a great knowledge for the game. He or she should be able to critic anything that there athlete is doing wrong and teach them the proper technique. The only way a coach can succeed is to dedicate him or herself to the sport and the athlete. The coach that dedicates themselves will get the attention and respect of the athlete they are training. Respect is key. Once the coach can gain the respect of their athlete then they can teach them more and put them harder. The athlete wont want to disappoint their coach so they keep pushing to meet his expectations. This whole cycle of dedication and respect varies with the age of the athletes they are working with. With a youth coach the dedication should be to the few practices the organization holds for the kids, at that young age if you burn the athlete out at a young age then they wont want to continue. As age increases so does the dedication.\n
  • #6: Patience is key when coaching a youth wrestler or athlete. Yelling at a little kid will do nothing to help the athlete. He or she will only lose respect for the coach and wont want to listen to the coach. When coaching young kids the practice can be serious at times but cant always be about preaching success. Fun and games need to be included to keep the focus of the kids and this will help there moral.\n
  • #7: With a youth coach the dedication should be to the few practices the organization holds for the kids, at that young age if you burn the athlete out at a young age then they wont want to continue. A young athlete will not have the attention span of one of an older age. Teaching the young athletes should not be overwhelming. Only teach them what they can handle because they will not remember what they were taught. Lastly, have fun with them. Keep them interested in the sport and stay patient, so play games.\n
  • #8: \n
  • #9: This level is very varied with the area the school is. Coaches tend to be varied also. The great programs in the good wrestling areas have outstanding coaches that are dedicated and knowledgable. This level requires more commitment than coaching a youth program. At this level more intangibles are need to have success. Coaches will have to start stressing a lot more technique and strength training.\n
  • #10: College can vary with the level and division the athlete picks. If they love the sport but dont want the intensity of a D1 school then they will go D2 or 3. Coaching for these levels is kind of like high school is way more laid back but it can still be intense. If the athlete chooses D1 then coaching will we extreme ! this entitles two-a-days everyday with intense conditioning. coaches will run it like a bootcamp for sports like wrestling and football or anysport that requires extreme conditioning and focus.\n
  • #11: Many parents and coaches have very different views on how both youth coaches should react when a match is over, win or lose. Many parents are way to hard on there child. \n
  • #12: Parents and coaches that try and run a bootcamp, like if the athlete loses then they get yelled at for it or worse.\n
  • #13: All ages should be treated differently. Younger children should be treated completely different then an older child. The older the athlete gets the more strict the practices and the coaching should get harder and more intense. A younger kids coach needs to have fun and build the relationship.\n
  • #14: Ken Chertow’s life has been absolutely devoted to wrestling, both competing and coaching. Chertow won a olympic gold metal for the United States. He runs some of the best camps for all ages in America. He thinks that emphasizing skill development is one of the biggest things he can do. He does not teach the kids more then they can handle, and keeping his students interested in what he is doing is key. Chertow will often ad stories and do fun activities like live matches to keep the attention of the kids. He also believes a key thing is teaching the wrestlers self discipline and sportsmanship.\n
  • #15: \n
  • #16: Talking to the athlete is key. Find out what he or she will want to do or learn. This will only build a better relationship and have a successful athlete.\n
