This document discusses research showing the benefits of integrating reading and writing skills in ESL instruction. It presents five tasks teachers can use to connect reading and writing at all levels: 1) having students write personal responses to readings, 2) taking notes on readings, 3) preparing summaries of readings, 4) analyzing readings using graphic organizers, and 5) researching evidence from readings to prepare their own texts. Examples are given for how to implement each task using the Ventures textbook series. The presentation encourages teachers to reflect on how they currently teach reading and writing skills and which tasks they could incorporate.
