Welcome
Create Opportunities for L2 Learners through
Simulations and Language Games – the Success
Mantra to Transcend Barriers in ESL Classes
- SARPPARAJE
An Overview of Today’s Presentation
Introduction
– Information era
– Traditional Approach is not enough
– Interactive Sessions are Mandatory
– How to Make Reluctant Students to Talk?
Here Comes our suggestions
Ways of getting ESL Students involved in
learning English
• Simulations
- Creative Activity
• Language Games
- Imaginative Activity
What & why Simulations :
 simulation is similar to role play.
 reported to have high motivational value.
 Discussions make students discover how the
language works.
 contains some “take-away” value.
Not Just That…
• activities are done in groups or pairs.
• Peer Member’s Mutual Help.
• Ultimately, Learners Come Out of ‘Shells’.
To quote Davies :
Discussion sessions would certainly increase
the amount of individual student talking time.
Students also practice valuable language used
in negotiation, argument, expressing opinion,
compromise, agreement, and disagreement.
Sample Simulation Activities
Hotel English
A Simulation for Business English Students
Different Than Me
Step Into the Real World - Careers & Service
Learning
Cell Phones Create Dangers
Usage of Language Games in English Classes
- Involves the productive and receptive skills
simultaneously.
- Offer a fun-filled and relaxing learning atmosphere.
- Anxiety is reduced and speech fluency is generated.
- Finally, create a bond between teacher and students.
In the Words of FLETA:
Games are simple structured activities which
may involve little language but are meaningful
to students and involve the whole self
(cognitively and emotionally), thus creating
strong associations with the language used.
Some Sample Language Games
Spelling Contest.
Call My Bluff.
Create Your Own Similes.
Word Treasure.
Conclusion
• not a proposal for replacement of traditional
education.
• a refreshing change.
• preparing students to enter the real world.
• encourage both shy and talkative students to
participate.
Final Thought
“Teaching English will never be an uphill battle if
every teacher tries to make the difference”
Thank You
