ISTIQOMAHISTIQOMAH
From the root Qaf – Waw – Mim ; stand still or firm,
rose/stand up, managed/conducted/ordered/regulated/superintended;
established, made it straight/right, maintain/erect/observe/perform, set
up, people/community/company, abode, stature/dignity/rank.
QAA-MA : to keep a thing or an affair in a right state.
QAWAMA : stood still; rise up
QIY-YAM : uphold; stand; QAYYIM : right, correct, true
ISTIQOM : It became right; direct; in a right state; straight; even;
tended towards the right, or desired, point, or object; had a right
direction, or tendency; ,or regular

““AndAnd strive hard in Allah’s causestrive hard in Allah’s cause with all the striving that iswith all the striving that is
due to Him: it isdue to Him: it is He who has elected you [to carry HisHe who has elected you [to carry His
message], and has laid no hardship on you in [anything thatmessage], and has laid no hardship on you in [anything that
pertains to religion, [and made you follow] the creed of yourpertains to religion, [and made you follow] the creed of your
forefather Abrahamforefather Abraham. It is He who has named you in bygone. It is He who has named you in bygone
times as well as in this [divine writ] – “those who havetimes as well as in this [divine writ] – “those who have

Approach in being “educated with the traditional Islamic method”, may
be subtly phased out with the (touted) “more innovative, lively, techno-
savvy, charismatic, motivational” lecturers and teachers.
Some may claim to be faithful to and may seem to be replicating the
“traditional method “, yet, when critically assessed these approaches
may be devoid of the essential spirit, unfaithful to its traditional history,
methods, wisdom and the philosophy etc. , ignoring the ‘ADAB’ which
qualitatively marks out Islamic education from others.
This point may be disputed, and may not sound plausible especially to
many who are unaware or unable to know the difference between them
– to differentiate the genuine from the false, unable to detect the
imitations being ‘marketed’ from the original.

Even when similar terminologies are used, familiar methods and
approaches employed, authoritative titles affixed etc. – yet, among
the many criteria, the important aspects of a truly “traditional Islamic
method” is that it is never approached in haste; every subject not
disparately taught, haphazard without concern for merits and priority
which Islam view each science; never truncated from its historical
roots and Prophetic legacy; nor oblivious towards the aim, objective
and desired outcome for which the Ummah has been assigned to fulfil.
Alas, as pointed out by Prof. Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas,
confusion in knowledge has led to breakdown in ADAB, whence
levelling occurs and this has paved the way for false leaders to rise.
ALLAAHU MUSTA-’AN

““AndAnd do not incline towardsdo not incline towards, nor rely upon, nor rely upon, those who are bent, those who are bent
on evildoingon evildoing (ZOLAMUU)(ZOLAMUU) lest the fire [of the hereafter] touchlest the fire [of the hereafter] touch
you: for [then] you would haveyou: for [then] you would have none to protect you from Allahnone to protect you from Allah,,
nornor would you ever be succoured [would you ever be succoured [helped by Himhelped by Him].”].”

What is scary is that if you disobey this, Allah SWT will leave youWhat is scary is that if you disobey this, Allah SWT will leave you
without any protection and will not help.without any protection and will not help.
It is important to heed this command - do not incline towardsdo not incline towards, nor rely, nor rely
uponupon, those who are bent on evildoing, those who are bent on evildoing (ZOLAMUU) .(ZOLAMUU) .
ALLAAHU MUSTA-’AN

““((FA-AQEEM WAJ-HAKAFA-AQEEM WAJ-HAKA) So direct your face toward) So direct your face toward
the religion (the religion (DEENDEEN), inclining to truth (), inclining to truth (HANEEFAHANEEFA).).
[Adhere to] the[Adhere to] the FITwRAHFITwRAH (primordial nature) of Allah(primordial nature) of Allah
upon which He has created [all] people.upon which He has created [all] people. No changeNo change
should there be in the creation of Allahshould there be in the creation of Allah. That is the. That is the
correct religion (correct religion (DEE-NUL-QAY-YEEMDEE-NUL-QAY-YEEM), but most of), but most of
the people do not know.”the people do not know.”

At a time when people admire progress and equates it with change,
we have to be very careful and concerned.
Like a journey, our life and living requires us to look beyond and
strive ahead towards a goal. But what should be our goal? Who sets
or influence the setting of our goal?
Even those whom we deem to be without vision, are upon a
direction charted by the media, society, culture, sub-culture etc.
As Muslims, we have our own guidance and guideline.
And as the vicegerent of Allah SWT, ours as Muslim, is to uphold the
trust (AMANAH) of Allah to preserve and protect. Whereas in
todays’ context mankind is fiercely competing in exploitation and
destruction; wanton display of arrogance by changing nature itself.

At every waking hours – daily, we must be trained to be reminded of
our true purpose for existence. When we neglect to do this, other
agendas and concerns would inevitably replace this and our life-
vision would subtly be shifted.
When this is repeated it forms into habit, and when the people we
interact with seemed to advocate similar thinking, vision and
motivation etc. such a ‘secular’ worldview then becomes fossilized
and ingrained into our core. Yet, if we pay utmost attention and
accord utmost importance to the daily practices according th Sunnah
as taught by generations of our traditional Ulama’ – making them as
the template for our daily activities, while all others are secondary
embellishments of the life of a Muslim, this shift can be prevented.

Therefore beginning (part i) of this module, we went through the
daily practices:

humble itself, and from supplication that is not heard, and from a soulhumble itself, and from supplication that is not heard, and from a soul
(self) that is never satisfied, and knowledge that does not benefit.(self) that is never satisfied, and knowledge that does not benefit.

To the non-experts, some things done by experts always look difficult
or impossible, yet how did the expert get to this level ?
They almost always began from a simple routine continued over time;
the pace and content gradually increased with time; the order and
priority always kept in view; repeating what seemed to be similar
routine, yet to them each day’s programme is regarded as unique and
they embrace it as opportunity with appreciation as though it is their
last chance, and having the stamina and patience bestowed by Allah
SWT to persevere consistently. Always make Du’a.
If we remember in ‘Ilmu-al-Akhlaq’ module, we learnt that disposition
can be formed by practice and repetition over time. Therefore, we
need to re-assessed our development of “FIQH-FID-DEEN” in same light

“A learned FAQIH (scholar & teacher) is truly FAQIH, one who does not cause others to
feel despair from receiving the mercy of Allah (i.e. not overly strict and too ‘harsh’); and
neither does he (give the impression by his behaviour, a guarantees as if ) anyone can
avert or withhold the wrath (punishment) of Allah, nor allows opportunity (by giving
dispensation) for anyone to disobey Allah (i.e. being inappropriately lax and too ‘nice’).
