MAYDAY
• WHAT DOES IT MEAN + STRUCTURE
Mayday it’s an international distress signal used in ships or airplane by radio
communication. It came into use in 1925 by the radio officer Frederick Stanley.
Frederick created this call to express distress situation clearly. It became from French
word “m´aider” that means “help me”. Before the MayDay, there was SOS, other type
of call with the same meaning but express in Morse code.
Mayday call should have next structure:
MAYDAY (X3)
THIS IS
NAME OF VESSEL (X3)
CALL SIGN OF VESSEL
MAYDAY
NAME OF VESSEL
CALL SIGN
POSITION (preferably in latitude and longitude but if no time give it in relation to a known
position)
NATURE OF DISTRESS
ASSISTANCE REQUIRED
OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION
• REASONS AND CONSEQUENCES
Mayday calls can be performed on any frequency. When a Mayday call is performed all
other activity on that certain frequency should cease unless is contributing to the
distress situation. A MAYDAY call can only be broadcasted in case of GRAVE and
IMMINENT danger.
Making a false distress call in the United States is a federal crime carrying sanctions of
up to six years imprisonment, and a fine of $250,000.
If a mayday call cannot be sent because a radio is not available a variety of other
distress signals and calls for help can be used. A mayday can be sent on behalf of one
vessel by another, using a convention called a mayday relay

• WHAT DOES IT MEAN + STRUCTURE
The three calls of PAN-PAN are used in radio communications, they can be used as a
call from Ship to Station or as a call from Station to Ships.
this call sign means an urgency on board but there is no danger for the live crew or the
vessel. However this call signal is also used to transmit the most important weather
reports.
Pan-Pan call should have next structure:
-Pan Pan (x3)

• REASONS AND CONSEQUENCES
The PAN-PAN call sign may be used for the next situations:
UNDER SAIL: Foulded Propeller/ Engine Failure / Out Of Fuel. The use of the Pan-
Pan call is important because in this situations you might be dangerous for other
vessels or cause collision situations.
SMALL FIRE ON BOARD.
Fire on board is very dangerous but if it is a small fire and we thing that we can control
the fire without injury for the crew, Pan-Pan report will be enought.
MAN OVER BOARD.
If Rescue of the man overboard controlled, Pan-Pan call sign is enought. If the
recovery vessel has lost the sight of the man overboard, if there is a danger of
hypothermia or any grave risk for his live the call sign MAY-DAY is Better.
INMINENT COLLISION ALERT.

SECURITE
• WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Of the three distress and urgency calls, Sécurité is the least urgent.
A radio call that usually issues navigational warnings, meteorological warnings,
and any other warning needing to be issued that may concern the safety of life
at sea, yet may not be particularly life-threatening.
• CONSEQUENCES
it means that what follows is important safety information. The most common use of
this is by coast radio stations before the broadcast of navigational warnings and
meteorological information.
These meteorological advisories include the development of weather systems such as
and not limited to, rain squalls, big tidal drops, major current shifts, lightning storms,
hurricane and tsunami warnings, high winds, and cyclones.
Although mostly used by coast radio stations, there is nothing to stop individual craft
broadcasting their own Sécurité messages where appropriate, for example, a yacht
becalmed (rendered motionless for lack of wind), or any vessel adrift or unable to
manoeuvre near other craft or shipping lanes.
• PROCEDURE
This type of call can be all ships, ships of a specific geographic area, or an
individual ship. Lastly, the call should be made as the GMDSS protocol requires
that the safety call must be spoken to attract attention of the selected vessels.
Procedure for the call is:
SÉCURITÉ x 3
ALL STATIONS x 3
THIS IS (Ship/Station Identification) x 3
Without a break, continue on to the safety message:
SÉCURITÉ
NAME, CALLSIGN, MMSI
POSITION
NATURE OF SAFETY MESSAGE

• WHAT TO DO IF YOU HEAR IT?
As securite is the less urgent type of call and mainly the call is for and announcement
or warning like bad weather, something that is floating in a determinate position....
You only have to do what you think is the safest action for your boat route... if you are
going to be passing the warning area and try to avoid the danger the best way you can.
But securite calls are never made by a ship on distress where human lives are in risk.
