This document analyzes data on small and medium enterprises in the UK from 2000 to 2014. It finds that the total number of businesses grew from 3.4 million to 5.2 million, a 51% increase. Nearly all (99%) of the growth came from sole proprietorships, which increased from 1.5 million to 3 million. Regionally, England saw the largest growth in new businesses at 399,400, though its increase was only 10% due to its large existing base. The North West region saw the greatest percentage growth of new businesses at 16%.
