Let’s Get Started
 Load your 420
lesson project
 Switch to the
Timeline view if
necessary
 Change the view to
Source - Sequence
3 Edit Buttons
 Yellow button
 Insert Edit
 Inserts the clip at the play
head position
 Ripples the timeline to the
right to make room for the
new clip inserted into the
timeline
 Shortcut F9
 Laptop fn & F9
A Little Catch-up if
Necessary
 If your timeline is
empty select the
Elysium or Pastel
music clip and click
the Insert button to
add it to the timeline
A Little Catch-up if
Necessary
 Move the play head
to the start of the
music clip.
 Select the fur subclip
and insert that clip to
the timeline
How About Another?
 Make sure the play
head is at the end of
the fur clip in the
timeline
 Select the Fishing clip
and set new In and Out
points to this clip
 Press F9 or click the
yellow button to insert
this clip to the timeline
Viewing the Timeline
 Horizontal Scroll Bar
 Dragging the bar up and
down changes the zoom
level of your timeline
 Dragging the bar left and
right allows you to see
other parts of your timeline
 Yellow line within the scroll
bar tells you where your
play head is in relation to
what you currently see
Have a Look Around
 Click on the scroll bar
and drag up to zoom
into your timeline.
 Click and drag left and
right to look at
different parts of your
timeline
 Note where the yellow
line is in relation to
your current view
Have a Look Around
 Press Shift Z to snap
your full to fit your
entire timeline into
the current view
 Need to see
everything quickly?
 Press Shift Z
3 Edit Buttons

 Overwrite edit
 This will overwrite any
content currently on the
timeline at the point of the
edit (where the play head
is located)
 Shortcut F10
 Laptop fn & F10
Perform an Overwrite
Edit
 In the timeline, move
the play head a second
or so before its current
Out point.
 Select the Going clip
and set an In and Out
point
 Click on the red edit
button or press F10 to
perform an overwrite
edit
Once Again
 In the timeline, leave the
play head at the Out
point of the Going clip.
 Select the Wings clip
and set an In point
 Set the out point 8
seconds after the In
point
 Click on the red edit
button or press F10 to
perform an overwrite
edit
Fix a Long Edit
 In the timeline, play
the sequence and
stop the play head
about 3 seconds
after Wings starts to
play
 We will cover the rest
of this clip with a new
one
Fix a Long Edit
 Select the Test Skills
clip and set an In
point at 12:45:29:00
before the diver
looks at the camera.
 Set an Out point at
12:45:33:15 after the
jellyfish passes him
Fix a Long Edit
 Press the red edit
button or press F10
to perform an
overwrite edit over
the Wings clip.
 Scrub back in your
sequence and play
your new
arrangement.

 Media Library clip must
be at least as long as the
clip in the sequence

 In the timeline select
the test skills clip

 The blue button has
several other types of
edits available
 Click on the white
triangle to see the other
edit functions

 Like the overwrite
edit, only backwards
 Uses the play head as
the Edit Out point
 Overwrites any clips
prior to the play head
position to the duration
set by the clip you edited
Try the Align Edit
 Position the play head
somewhere within the
began clip.
 Select the fishing clip
 Select the Align Edit
 Notice how it overwrites
clips before the play
head
 Undo the action
(Command Z)

sequence

 Notice that it places the
clip at the very start of
the timeline

 Ripple Replace
 Replaces the selected
clip in the sequence with
a clip from the Media
Library
 Sequence adjusts to the
replacing clip’s duration
 If shorter, the timeline
clips ripple left
 If longer, the timeline
clips ripple right
Try the Ripple Replace
Edit
 Select the wings clip
 Select the fishing clip
in the Media Library
 Select Ripple Replace
 Notice that fishing is
now in the wings spot in
the sequence and the
clips to the right rippled
left to close the gap
 Undo the action
(Command Z)

 Replace Media
 Replaces the selected clip
in the sequence with a clip
from the Media Library
 Duration of the replaced
clip does not change
 Replacing clip needs to
be at least as long as the
clip it will replace
 Will ignore out points
and use all media if
necessary
Try the Replace Media
Edit
 Select the wings clip
again
 Select the fishing clip
in the Media Library
 Select Media Replace
 Notice that fishing is
now in the wings spot in
the sequence, but the
duration of the clip did
not change
 Undo the action
(Command Z)
More Than Meets the Eye
 Fit to fill
 Replaces the selected
clip in the sequence with
a clip from the Media
Library
 Speed of the replacing
clip will adjust to fill the
space of the original clip
in the sequence
 Shorter = slows down
 Longer = speeds up
Try the Fit to Fill Edit
 In the viewer, press
Shift I to move the play
head to the In point
 Press Shift  3 times
to move the playhead
forward 1 second
 (10 frames X3)
 Set an Out point so the
total duration of this
clip is 1 second
Try the Fit to Fill Edit
 In the timeline select
the began clip
 This clip is nearly 4
seconds long
 Select the Fit to Fill
edit
 Play the sequence and
notice how the fishing
clip is now a slomo
 Press Command Z to
undo
Finish Off the Sequence
 Click in the empty
space to the right of
the last clip above
the audio
 Creates a gap clip @2
½ seconds long for
now
 Select the sunset
quest clip in the
Media Library
Finish Off the Sequence
 Press Shift I to move
the play head to the
beginning of the clip
 Press I to set an In
point
 Click on the Duration
window and type 5 0
0 and press return to
set a duration of 5
seconds
Finish Off the Sequence
 Press Shift I to move
the play head to the
beginning of the clip
 Press I to set an In
point
 Click on the Duration
window and type 5 0
0 and press return to
set a duration of 5
seconds
Storyboard Editing
 Arrange your
thumbnailed clips in
the order you need
them
 Thumbnail with the
red outline is the
sequence

 Change the view
from Source-
Sequence to
Thumbnails
Storyboard Editing
 Thumbnail view is
based on what is
selected in the Media
Library
 Where the Eye is at is
what you see on the
right

 In the Media Library
make sure the eye is
next to your Video
folder
 Click on other
folders to change the
thumbnail view to
other folders, but
return the view to the
Video folder
Organize your Clips
 Click on the
Thumbnails Task
menu
 Choose Arrange >
Clean Up All
 Clips arranged five
across, but not all the
clips can be seen
 To see all the clips
within a folder choose
Fit All
Getting Around in
Thumbnail View
 All the same player
controls and markers
still work in Thumbnail
view
 Put your cursor on the
clip you are interested in
marking & use keyboard
shortcuts to navigate
and mark the clip
Getting Around in
Thumbnail View
 All the markers looks
the same, only much
smaller
 In point
 Play head
 Marker
 Out point
Navigate a Thumb
 Simply place your
cursor on the journey
clip
 Press L to play the clip
 The clip becomes
selected and begins
playing from its current
play head position
 Try J, K, L, Space bar,
, 
 Put the cursor in the
lower third and drag
back and forth
Mark a Thumb
 Put the cursor in the
lower third of the
thumbnail and scrub
to 2:45:00 and mark
an In point
 Scrub to 2:48:00 and
mark an Out point
Create a New Sequence
 Right click the
Sequence folder in
the Media Library
and select New >
Sequence
 Name the new
sequence
Storyboard, then
select Create in the
bottom right
Do a Storyboard Edit
 Holding the Command key, click on
Journey, then 3 or 4 other clips in the media
browser that have In and Out points
 The order you select them will be the order of clips in
the timeline
Do a Storyboard Edit
 While the clips are selected, drag the clips to
the timeline over the video track in the
timeline
Do a Storyboard Edit
 In the bottom right corner, click on Timeline
Layout Combo box
 It should be set to home (Shift Z) and will zoom out to
show you the complete sequence of all your clips
Do a Storyboard Edit
 Play your
storyboard
sequence
 Your viewer in
thumbnail view is
the clip with the
red outline in the
media browser
Homework Assignment:
 Take a snapshot
of your timeline
 Should have video
clips over the entire
music track
 Save the image to
the Smoke 3
Dropbox

More Than Meets the Eye  Replace Media  Replaces the selected clip in the sequence with a clip from the Media Library  Duration of the replaced clip does not change  Replacing clip needs to be at least as long as the clip it will replace  Will ignore out points and use all media if necessary
  • 29. Try the Replace Media Edit  Select the wings clip again  Select the fishing clip in the Media Library  Select Media Replace  Notice that fishing is now in the wings spot in the sequence, but the duration of the clip did not change  Undo the action (Command Z)
  • 30. More Than Meets the Eye  Fit to fill  Replaces the selected clip in the sequence with a clip from the Media Library  Speed of the replacing clip will adjust to fill the space of the original clip in the sequence  Shorter = slows down  Longer = speeds up
  • 31. Try the Fit to Fill Edit  In the viewer, press Shift I to move the play head to the In point  Press Shift  3 times to move the playhead forward 1 second  (10 frames X3)  Set an Out point so the total duration of this clip is 1 second

  • 40. Organize your Clips  Click on the Thumbnails Task menu  Choose Arrange > Clean Up All  Clips arranged five across, but not all the clips can be seen  To see all the clips within a folder choose Fit All

  • 43. Navigate a Thumb  Simply place your cursor on the journey clip  Press L to play the clip  The clip becomes selected and begins playing from its current play head position  Try J, K, L, Space bar, ,   Put the cursor in the lower third and drag back and forth
  • 44. Mark a Thumb  Put the cursor in the lower third of the thumbnail and scrub to 2:45:00 and mark an In point  Scrub to 2:48:00 and mark an Out point
  • 45. Create a New Sequence  Right click the Sequence folder in the Media Library and select New > Sequence  Name the new sequence Storyboard, then select Create in the bottom right
  • 46. Do a Storyboard Edit  Holding the Command key, click on Journey, then 3 or 4 other clips in the media browser that have In and Out points  The order you select them will be the order of clips in the timeline
  • 47. Do a Storyboard Edit  While the clips are selected, drag the clips to the timeline over the video track in the timeline
  • 48. Do a Storyboard Edit  In the bottom right corner, click on Timeline Layout Combo box  It should be set to home (Shift Z) and will zoom out to show you the complete sequence of all your clips
  • 49. Do a Storyboard Edit  Play your storyboard sequence  Your viewer in thumbnail view is the clip with the red outline in the media browser
