This document summarizes a presentation on next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies for forensic DNA analysis. It discusses multiplex assays available for sequencing short tandem repeats (STRs) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and compares their performance in terms of number of loci, allele coverage, and heterozygote balance. It also describes how NGS can provide additional genetic information at STR loci through sequencing of flanking regions and resolution of mixtures. NGS enables high-resolution ancestry and phenotype prediction from SNP data.
