- 7. Structural Functionalism Summary Basic Idea: Societies are stable systems with interrelated parts that work together to function as a whole. Emphasizes the role that all social structures play in maintaining societal cohesion. Critique: Just because something exists and persists doesn’t prove that it is necessary. Re-read Davis and Moore with Tumin to see an example of a theoretical argument from this paradigm (Davis and Moore) and critique of this paradigm for thinking about social inequality (Tumin).
