Editor's Notes

  • #4: Hi I’m Esteban, I’m Somerlea’s husband. Up until 6 months ago I led social media marketing for the Samsung brand in the U.S. before moving to New Westminster. I’ve had the honor of being Samsung’s first employee to focus entirely on social media and over the years I’ve also had the privilege to work with great brands like Microsoft, SAP, AT&T and DIRECTV.
  • #5: We’re here representing Social Nerdia Consulting, a consultancy focused on the convergence of technology, marketing and of course social media. We work with brands, agencies, and startups like Sprinklr.
  • #9: We're very biased in that we can't imagine life without the web. However, we've also spent quite a bit of time studying trends and separating the facts from the myths. In fact, I recently published a book called SOCIAL STATE. Somerlea helped edit the book, which we self-published and we’d be happy to send you a Kindle or iBooks copy if you’d like one.
  • #10: Despite our bias, one thing is for sure:Social Media is ubiquitous and it is disrupting entire industries.Socialnetworks are the most popular activity online and we take them with us everywhere. In fact, by next year almost 30% of all humans and almost 85% of all internet users will be on social media.
  • #12: There are over 200 million active Twitter users all over the world. Originally with text and now with photos and Vine videos, Twitter has transformed how the world communicates in real-time. From reports on war and world events to tweets by Shaq, the Pope and everyone in between, Twitter is where we learn about what’s relevant at any given moment.
  • #14: YouTube has turned everyone into a broadcaster. It is today’s MTV, today’s America’s Funniest Home Videos and it threatens television as we know it.Gangnam Style, the song by a widely unknown South Korean artist named Psywas the first video to reach 1 billion views on YouTube, giving a whole new meaning to the word “viral.”
  • #16: Today, there are more people on more social networks than ever before. Beyond the main social networks there’s an entire social long tail of services out there. From Path, Vine, App.net and Google+, to massive Chinese networks like SinaWeibo, RenRen and QQ, the globe continues to get hyperconnected.
  • #18: Skeptics need only look at Obama’s 2008 campaign, which showed the power of digital scale from small donations via TXT messages to wide amplification on Facebook and Twitter.
  • #19: Obama’s “We just made history” victory tweet in 2008 had 181 retweets and it culminated what was then one of the most compelling, sophisticated and engaging campaigns in history.
  • #20: Fast forward to last year and we see that Obama’s “Four more years” victory tweet had 809,000 retweets. While his focus was on awareness in 2008, the focus turned to retention and loyalty in 2012.
  • #21: Barack Obama built trust and he gave people hope.
  • #22: Ultimately, technology, including social media, provided relevance his campaign, for the Democratic party, and for supporters as well.
  • #23: Social media will not create a brand, but it will definitely help drive and build your brand. It can help you create awareness, retention, loyalty, and even fundraising and votes.
  • #24: However, social media effectiveness doesn’t just happen. A solid social media strategy must have a solid infrastructure, solid technology, solid objectives and a clear vision.
  • #26: Constantly listen, engage and amplify messages through owned, paid and earned media.EARN IS KEY.EARN TRUST, and EARN RELEVANCE.
