What holds teachers back from being
            Tech Savvy?

Is it a lack of time to keep
up with new
technology, or a lack of
interest?
Question
Does the rate at which the internet is
increasingly becoming a part of our lives excite
or frighten you?
Slow down or Speed up?
Technology is not going to slow down in order for
teachers to catch up. No one knows all there is to
know about the new apps, software and
hardware that currently exists as it continually
evolves around us.

We must as teachers be willing to embrace what
we can do with technology, which begins with
     STAYING SAFE ONLINE
Email Safety
• Do NOT open any emails from a source that you do not
recognise. You should be able to determine the
sender’s name or subject and whether it is relevant for
  you.
• If you do open an email and realise that it could be
potentially dangerous, add the sender to your ‘blocked
senders’ list. Do not reply to this email at all
• Do not respond to ANY email that claims to be from
your bank. If a bank needs to contact you about your
account, they will call you or send you a postal letter
Email Safety
• Ensure you have an anti-virus program that is up
to date on the school network and at home.
• If using a public computer, ensure you log out of
your email website completely and close the
  internet browser.
• And finally – that email from Nigeria claiming to
give you $1 billion just for the privilege of using
your account really is too good to be true! Delete,
  block and move on
Try keeping up with all of this!!!
Social networking for schools
Social networking for schools
In Australia alone, approximately 9.8 million
users log in to Facebook every month

61% of these users are deemed to be under
the age of 21 years
The simplicity of Facebook
 Relationship Status, Age, Interests, Photos....

These can be fantastic to share...
 But ensure you are
 sharing responsibly!

Why is Social Networking so popular?

We are living in a time of Instant Gratification;
we want our information provided in a FAST,
interactive method that continually gives us a
sense of belonging and importance.
Facebook Terms
• Include:
You will not bully, intimidate, or harass any user.
You will not post content that: is hateful, threatening, or
pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or
  graphic or gratuitous violence.
You will not provide any false personal information on
Facebook, or create an account for anyone other than
  yourself without permission.
You will not use Facebook if you are under 13.
You will not use Facebook if you are a convicted sex
  offender.
You will not solicit login information or access an
  account belonging to someone else.
Facebook has the right to....
• For content that is covered by intellectual property
rights, like photos and videos (IP content), you
specifically give us the following permission, subject to
your privacy and application settings: you grant us a
  non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-
free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you
post on or in connection with Facebook (IP License).
• When you delete IP content, it is deleted in a manner
similar to emptying the recycle bin on a computer.
However, you understand that removed content may
persist in backup copies for a reasonable period of time
(but will not be available to others).
The question is....
• How many of our us… our students, actually
READ and UNDERSTOOD these terms and
conditions before clicking ‘Yes I Accept’????
By the way.
YOU ARE NOT FACEBOOK’S CUSTOMER. YOU
ARE THE PRODUCT THAT THEY SELL TO THEIR
REAL CUSTOMERS – ADVERTISERS.
         » Steve Greenberg
Facebook is the digital playground
Facebook is the method in
which our students interact 24
hours a day, no matter where
they are or what they do. As
with an actual playground, the
interactions are not always
polite.
It only takes....
A few pieces of information for someone to
determine your locality, such as a:
• School
• Workplace
• Distinguishing picture
Permanent Landscape
Social Networking users need to be aware that
ANYTHING they write, post, upload or file
leaves a DIGITAL IMPRINT in cyberspace. Even
deletion of files on Social Networking sites
does not mean that it is removed from that
site, or that anyone else in the world has
already downloaded it.
• 44% of businesses search about someone
whose services or advice they require.

• Employers screen job candidates online. 34%
are screened due to this information.
The Newspaper Rule
If you wouldn’t want it printed in a newspaper...

Don’t put it online!

Having a few staff as friends
• I feel can provide advice if your uploaded
  photos are inappropriate.

• Instant communication
Groups for student learning
• Won’t allow you to see personal information
• I advise to invite another staff member to be
  apart of your group.
• Not all students have facebook nor are
  allowed.
Pages
• Students can like, allowing you to access their
  personal profiles.
• Not appropriate for educational purposes.
Emails between staff and students
• Is this a form of grooming?
• What is the difference?

Satisfy the Social Network ‘Urge’
There are many social networking sites that
now cater for the Education System, that allow
for secure networks where school
communities can interact on many levels.
So… the best one?
Edmodo
• A ‘Facebook’ like social networking tool that
allows classes to act as groups, discussing
  assignments and issues.
• Completely secure, teacher controls content
• Ability to upload and submit assignments
  online.
• Provides absent students and teachers the
  ability to stay in contact.
• Parents can be apart but only see interactions
  between teacher and their child.

Strategies
• It makes no sense to teach kids to be safe
online by preventing them from being
online. This would be like trying
                        to
teach someone to swim on dry
 land!
Stranger Danger

• This is no different to

     stranger danger
How Cybersmart are you?
Technology will not slow down...
Technology is NOT an option
If teachers fail to embrace technology, not
only are they failing to prepare their students
for the future, but they themselves will be left
behind in a society that will demand
proficiency in technology.
Technology is NOT an option
It is increasingly becoming a NECESSITY.

Educators must be willing to adapt to new and
emerging technologies as much as possible to
ensure that learners are not stifled by a lack of
vision and knowledge.
