What is “Web 2.0”? “… refers to a perceived second generation of web development and design, that facilitates communication, secure information sharing, interoperability, and collaboration on the World Wide Web” - Wiki Advanced technologies  Increased computer literacy  Web 1.0…?  Push vs Pull  … Web 3.0?!
What is “Social Media”? “ The facilitation of online sharing , information collaboration, and open expression of interest” Social networking in Plain English
How will it help me?  Building relationships  Getting your name out  Branding yourself  Building face value  Showing that you “know”
Remember the “Why” Promote yourself  Establish relationships  Research, research, research!  Track everything
What you need:  Valid email (accessible from any computer)  A topic of interest  Two browsers open to set up (recommended)

What makes it different: Everything is kept short  All about keeping up to date  “ Code of ethics”  Encourages information networking in real-time

Some twitter lingo to know:  Tweet: Simply a post  RT @: Stands for “Re-Tweet”  Shows someone else you’re interested in their topic and are forwarding it on. The “@” is used to tag someone.  #Hashtag: A digital bookmark for easy searching  DM: A direct message to someone Tiny: Used as a verb, to shrink a URL
Advice to know:  If you have mobile, use it!  Don’t expect an immediate crowd  Shrink your URLs ( http://bit.ly )  Use abbreviations… don’t over-use  Keep it relevant  Use effective timing
 
What is  LinkedIn ?  Has been called “The Facebook for Business”  Formatted for business networking needs  Creates connections between people, industries, companies, and careers  Compiles all your professional info for a one-stop shop
