Society and individuals influence each other, though their interests do not always align. Models of disability fall into two categories - individual models that see disability as a problem of the individual, and societal models that view disability as created by society. Historically, individual models dominated but societal models developed in the 20th century and conceptualize disability as stemming from social and environmental barriers rather than just the individual.
