For our project, one of us had put on a Polish accent and  asked people for help in the Fairview mall
OUr Hypothesis Our hypothesis was that we would be met with anger or frustration because we did this experiment on December 23rd
Volume of voice Tone of voice Facial expression Eye contact Body language Employee or Shopper Changes that we looked for
Test #1 Starbucks employee Asked for ice coffee No noticeable change in her voice She squinted and paused indicating confusion
Test #2 Shopper Asked for a music store No change in voice Squinted very much out of confusion Looked as though he was in a hurry Note: Asked in view of HMV
Test #3 HMV employee Asked for a Polish singer No change in voice Very cheerful, smiling, joked often Kept eye contact and no noticeable body language
Test #4 Shopper Asked for a game store Voice was calm No noticeable facial or body expression Kept eye contact
Test #5 Sports Experts Employee (Shoes) Asked for a Polish size 39 shoe Voice began cheerful, then became angry Face started smiling, then became angry
Test #6 Shopper Asked for a girl’s shop for a girlfriend Voice was slightly loud and angry Squinted and furrowed his brow Leaned in one direction showing he wanted to leave Believe he said “filthy foreigner”
Test #7 Detox employee Asked for a bright yellow shirt Voice was quiet and confused Looked away often and scratched her arm
Test #8 Shopper Asked for the exits Voice remained calm Squinted slightly Seemed to be in a rush
Test #9 A&W employee Asked for a burger Her voice stayed calm, paused at times Squinted, kept eye contact She kept repeating what was said
Test #10 Shopper Asked for a bookstore She looked around and glared Talked as condescendingly Note: Asked within view of the book store
Our Results Surprisingly, most people were quite friendly and helpful The employees were nicer than the shoppers
Conclusion In conclusion, people were surprisingly nice Employees were more helpful than shoppers Despite the amount of people and the time of the experiment most people were pleasant
