Introduction
 A Standard Operating Procedure is a set of written instructions that
describes the step-by-step process that must be taken to properly
perform a routine activity.
 SOPs provide the policies, processes and standards needed for the
organization to succeed.
An important aspect of a quality system is to work according to
unambiguous standard operating procedures.
 In fact the whole process from sampling to the filing of the analytical
result should be described by a continuous series of SOPs.
Benefits of SOP
 The right SOPs can help promote the change people want to see at the
office. They’re meant to improve the way things are done at work, and
they can be easily changed when it’s called for.
 New employees could use SOPs to learn important things about your
business. They’ll be able to understand how often processes need to be
done, what it takes to complete a process from start to finish, and how
everyone in their department plays into the process.
 SOPs can eliminate a lot of questions that can slow down important
business decisions. When you have an SOPs for your most important
tasks, you make it easier for your employees to follow directions and get
things done right the first time.
Purpose of SOPs
 SOPs detail the regularly recurring work processes that are to he
conducted or followed within an organization.
 SOPs are intended to be specific to the organization to maintain their
quality control and quality assurance process and ensure compliance with
governmental regulations.
 The use of SOP needs to be reviewed and re- enforced by management,
preferably the direct supervisor.
Preparation of SOP
 The standard procedure should be easy to read and step-by-step. It
must be short and straightforward and should remove all the doubts of
the reader. The illustrations and flow charts can be used to describe the
process.
 The SOPS should be developed by knowledgeable individuals who
understand the internal structure and activities in an organization. The
subject- matter who participate in the work or use the process are the
individuals.
 For multi-task operations, a team approach needs to be followed
because the experience of multiple individuals is valuable as it promotes
buy-in from potential SOP users.
Initiating A SOP
To initiate a Good SOP
. We need to follow the following steps
 Step 1- Develop a set of processes that you believe need SOP creation
 Step 2- Plan the process for developing and managing SOP's
 Step 3- Collect information for the content of your SOP
• Identify the subject matter you'll get the information from
• Check for documentation that may already be available
 Step 4- Write review and submit your SOP
Objectives for SOP
 Standard Operating Procedure is used to described the responsibilities of the
coordinating centre for managing and monitoring the participating sites. SOPs
provides guidelines for accurate and timely data collection resolutions of data
clarification
 It get details the regularly recurring work process that are to be conducted or
followed in the organization and companies. It also facilitate consistent
conformance to technical and quality system requirement and support data
quality
 SOPs help to maintain there quality control and quality assurance processes and
also ensure compliance with governmental regulations. To serve as a training
document for teaching user about the process for which SOP was written

Components of SOP
 Title page-: Lists the title of the procedure, for whom it is intended -- the specific
role, department, team or agency -- its SOP identification number and the
names and signatures of the people who prepared and approved the manual.
 Table of contents. -: Provides easy access to the various sections in large SOPs.
 A step-by-step list of the procedures -: Includes explanations of the task's goal,
roles and responsibilities, regulatory requirements, terminology, descriptions of
what needs to be done to complete each step and a discussion of decisions that
must be made. This section will make up most of the SOP
.
 Once the draft has been written, it must be reviewed, edited and tested multiple
times. This process should repeat until an SOP has been written that is approved
by all stakeholders. At this point, it can be distributed to every person who needs
it to do their job.
TYPES OF SOP
Several categories and types of SOPs can be distinguished.
Some of the most important SOP types are:
 Fundamental SOPs. These give instructions how to make SOPs of the other
categories.
 Methodic SOPs. These describe a complete testing system or method of
investigation.
 SOPs for safety precautions
 Standard procedures for operating instruments, apparatus and other equipment.
 SOPs for analytical methods.
 SOPs for the preparation of reagents.
 SOPs for receiving and registration of samples.
 SOPs for Quality Assurance.
