Sorting Out Life FOSS Investigation 2 Part 1
Organize It!! Scientists need a reference system Organize all levels of life to make sense of its structure For example – the Earth is a series of “nested, interacting spheres” Lithosphere Rocky, mineral, solid layer extending to the solid area of the Earth’s mantle http://www2.cet.edu/ete/hil912/intro/spheres.html
Earth’s Layers Continued Atmosphere Thin layer of gases surrounding the Earth that extends 600 km above the surface Hydrosphere The Earth’s water component Liquid, gas, and solids including lakes, rivers, glaciers, clouds, fog, and rain http://www2.cet.edu/ete/hil912/intro/spheres.html
Earth’s Layers continued Biosphere All the living organisms contained on & around the Earth This sphere interacts with the lithosphere and can be found in the atmosphere Ecosphere All spheres listed above are included in the ecosphere A portion of the ecosphere is found in each of the previous spheres Any area of the planet that contains a living thing in it http://www2.cet.edu/ete/hil912/intro/spheres.html
VISUAL MODEL OF THE EARTH’S SPHERES http://www.classzone.com/books/earth_science/terc/content/visualizations/es0102/es0102page01.cfm?chapter_no=visualization
Ecosphere Millions of life forms in the ecosphere Specific vocabulary to identify life within it Many of the life forms called species An individual is the smallest unit of a species A population is more than one type of organism or species These populations are part of a community.
Vocabulary Terms Organism = any living thing Species = a particular group of organisms Individual = one single organism or species Population = a group of individuals or more than one individual (species or organism) Community = interacting populations in a particular area
Three Views Smallest view Individual Medium view Population Larger view Community All deal with living part of the ecosphere Biotic factors and effects The ecosphere contains biotic and abiotic factors and effects! All living and nonliving things within it.
Ecosystem Focus for our studies in this class. Piece of ecology containing biotic & abiotic factors Example Sea Aquatic organisms Fish, kelp, algae, plankton, sharks Rocks, dirt, salt found under & in sea water
Other Vocabulary Terms Ecosystem = an area where organisms interact with nonliving factors (system) Biotic = living organisms and their products Abiotic = anything that is nonliving
Ecosystem Card Sort In groups….Organize deck of ecosystem cards into groups listed on the two papers Individual, population, Undecided, Community, Ecosystem, & Abiotic Make sure that you have a reason why you place it in the category Use the Ecosystem Card Sort WS to log your info
