Sound Devices
in Poetry
Exploring the soundscapes of
poetry
Great Books
Poetic sound devices exemplify the
difference between prose and poetic
language. They enhance the meaning of a
poem and make it easy to memorize.
Do they occur naturally? or is it intentional?
Rhyme 01.
The repetition of words with the same
sound in a poem. The pattern of similarly
pronounced words in a poem is thus known
as a rhyme scheme.
Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor
right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there
came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my
chamber door.
Meter 02.
Relies on the poet's word choice and the
characteristics of syllables in those words.
Metrical measures contribute greatly to the
rhythm or the "beats" in a poem.
Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.
How many syllables are in each line?
Proclaimed/ the time/ was nei/ther wrong/ nor
right./
I have/ been one/ acquain/ted with/ the night./
iamb- metrical foot consisting of two syllables,
where the first syllable is unstressed, and the
second syllable is stressed
pentameter- 10 syllables with 5 sets of iambs per line
This type of meter is known as iambic pentameter
Trochaic- each foot consists of a stressed syllable followed by an
unstressed syllable
Once upon a midnight dreary
Anapestic- two unstressed syllables followed by a stressed
syllable in each foot
For the MOON ne-ver BEAMS with-out BRINGing me DREAMS
Dactylic- a stressed syllable followed by two unstressed syllables
in each foot
THIS is the FORest prim-eval, the MURmur-ing PINES and the
HEMlocks.
Euphony
03.
The words sound sweet hence evoking
pleasant emotions. Smooth consonants like l
and n, nasal consonants like h, and a lot of
vowel sounds.
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
All thinking things, all objects of all thought,
And rolls through all things
Cacophony
04.
Uses harsh sounds that evoke unpleasant
feelings such as annoyance and rage.
Consonant sounds like k, c, g, b, t create
cacophony when they occur closely and are
used to present negative situations.
But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height,
Hear the loud alarum bells—
Brazen bells!
What a tale of terror, now, their turbulency tells!
In the startled ear of night
How they scream out their affright!
Too much horrified to speak,
They can only shriek, shriek,
Assonance
05.
The repetition of vowel sounds within a line in
poetry. The sounds are repetitive, whether at
the beginning of words, in the middle or at the
end.
Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Aliteration
06.
The repeated consonant sounds appear at
the initial letter of words and are discernible.
Alliteration often occurs unintentionally but
can be used intentionally for emphasis and
sound effects.
I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
Sixty syllables in six seconds is a
Slim syllable, dictionaric anorexic.
Consonance
The repetition of consonant sounds close to each other within a line in a poem,
whether in the middle or at the end of words
07.
Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.
There is repetitive use of consonant sounds r, n, and th
Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
"Now the day bleeds into nightfall
And you're not here to get me through it all
I let my guard down and then you pulled the rug
I was getting kind of used to being someone you loved"
Dissonance
08.
The breaking of rhythm in a poem, the absence of harmony. Can go beyond
sound, whereby the attitude, theme, or imagery of the poem is inharmonious.
I have walked out in rain—and back in rain. [line 2]
I have out walked the furthest city light. [line 3]
