This document discusses spatial analysis of crime patterns in Shanghai, China using police records and GIS. It introduces how crime has increased in China since economic reforms, and how spatial analysis of crime hot spots can help criminal justice practices and research. The study area is Shanghai, and crime data from 2006 is obtained from Shanghai police and classified into 175 types. Spatial, exploratory, macro, meso, and micro-level analyses of crime patterns in Shanghai are conducted, as well as spatio-temporal and land use analyses to investigate relationships between crime and environmental factors.
