Mini-activity
Hold your breath as long as you can!
Take in mind what your body is telling you as you hold your breath!
Mini-activity
Hold your breath as long as you can!
Take in mind what your body is telling you as you hold your breath!
Holding your breath
What did you notice?
Did you feel pain anywhere?
What did you think happened when you couldn’t breathe?
Internal Systems
The human body is made up of organs which are made up of tissues
Organs = structures in your body that have specific roles within the body
EX: Heart, Lungs, Brain, and Skin
Tissues = a group of cells that work together to perform a specific function
EX: Epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous
Thoracic Cavity
Thoracic Cavity = giant area in the
middle of the body that contains the
heart and the lungs
Respiratory System
All animals exchange gas taking in
Oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide
through cellular respiration
Respiration = the process of breathing
taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide
Parts of the Respiratory System
Mouth Area
Nasal Cavity = area in
which air can enter through
the nose and filtered out by
nose hairs
Oral Cavity = the term to
describe the mouth
Pharynx = area in which the
nasal and oral cavity join
Epiglottis = small “lever” that controls whether
things go down your trachea or your digestive
system
Down the Throat
Larynx = The “voicebox” below
the pharynx
Trachea =region that connects Larynx to the lungs
Trachea
The trachea contains C-shaped
cartilage rings
- They
In the lungs
Bronchus/Bronchi =
passageway from the trachea
to the lungs
Bronchioles = smaller tubes
past the bronchi leading to
alveoli
Alveoli = tiny air sacs that
exchanges oxygen with blood
Alveoli Gas exchange
- Alveoli exchange
oxygen with blood
through diffusion
- Oxygen in, carbon
dioxide out
- Carbon dioxide is toxic
to humans in high
quantities
Surfactant
- Detergent that
reduces the surface
tension of the alveoli
so it doesn’t collapse
→ Babies are watched to
ensure healthy
Respiratory
system
Breathing Process Inspiration/Inhalation
Air moves from higher to
lower pressure
If air pressure less in lungs
than air → Lungs
Breathing Process Inspiration/Inhalation and Exhalation/Expiration
Diaphragm
- contracts and moves
downwards by external
intercostal muscles →
increase in volume of
chest cavity → Air goes in
- Expands and moves
upwards by internal
intercostal muscles →
decrease in volume of
chest cavity → Air goes
out
Pleural Membranes
Pleural membranes = small membrane
outside of the lungs that help protect the
lung from friction against the rib cage
Direct Inhalation and Exhalation
1. Oral and Nasal Cavity
2. Epiglottis/Pharynx
3. Larynx
4. Trachea
5. Bronchi
6. Bronchioles
7. Alveoli
2 Lungs of your body
Right lung
- Contains 3 lobes ensure you know
they are on the right side
Left Lung
- Contains 2 lobes, 1 less to fit the
heart
Breathing Adaptation
- Human breathing can change depending on their situation
1. High altitudes (low air pressure) → increased red blood cells
and
2. Deep Water Diving (High Pressure)
Gill Respiratory Systems
- There is oxygen in water and
fish are able to get oxygen from
them
Gill Respiratory Systems
- Water will flow through the gills
and oxygen will diffuse
through the gills to the
bloodstream
Bird Respiratory System
1. 1st Inhale air moves
through to posterior
air sacs
2. 1st exhale → air
moves to lungs
3. 2nd Inhale → air
moves to front air
sacs
4. 2nd Exhale → air
moves outside of
mouth of birds
1 way continuous flow
Insects Respiratory System
- Insects use spiracles that open up in
their body to let air in and contact their
circulatory system
Respiratory Diseases
Bronchitis = swelling of bronchi and bronchioles from
viral/bacterial infection or irritants like smoke
Bronchial Asthma = inflammation of bronchi and
bronchioles from an allergic reaction
- Puffers to help deal with these issues
Carbon Monoxide = will prevent your blood from
taking in oxygen → cannot take oxygen and bring
oxygen to cells
Exit Ticket Questions
How does your diaphragm move when you inhale air? When you exhale air?
What’s the difference between how we breathe and gills?
What are the parts of the Respiratory System
