Speech Communication
What is Communication??
• Communication is a two-way process by
which information is exchanged betweenor
among individuals through a common
system ofsymbols, signs,and behavior
(Martinez 1)
Principles of Communication
1.Communication is aprocess. – It is an activity
that begins from astarting point.
2.Communication is asystem. –It involves
interrelated parts that affect oneanother (Wood
10).
3.Communication is Dynamic. –It is not a single
event but is on-going sothat communicatorsare
at onceboth senders and receivers (Martin and
Nakayama 29)
Principles of Communication
4. Communication is both interactional and
transactional. – communicatorstake turns in
sending and receiving message. simultaneous
exchange
5. Communication can beIntentional or
unintentional.
Purposes of communication
1. To Discover–One ofthe majorpurposes of
communicationconcerns personal discovery. We
also discover the external world – events, news,
objects, ideas, etc.
2. To relate – To beable to express ourfeelings
towards something or someone. Also, to feel
loved and liked.
Purposes of communication
3. To Persuade– We attempt to change the
behaviour and attitude of others.
4. To Play – Muchof our communication behaviour
is designed to entertain others – telling jokes,
relating interesting stories, and saying clever
things.
Components of
Communication• Sender-receiver –a person both sends and receives
messages. The sender initiates the messagewhile the
receivertakes in the message.
• Message– thought, feelings, ideas, attitudes, and
sentiments that the sourcewants to share.
• Channel – directionor route wherethe messageis
conveyedthrough
• Feedback– response of the receiver (verbalornon-
verbal)
Components of
Communication• Setting or Environment (context) – psychological,
social, cultural,and physicalconditions in which
communicationoccurs.
• Noise – anything that blocks andinterefereswith the
meaning of a particularmessage.(Environmental
noise, Physiological –Impairmentnoise, semantic
noise, syntactical noise, organizationalnoise, cultural
noise, psychologicalnoise)
Process of Oral
Communication• Stage 1 – Stimulus : this can bean idea, startling news,
disagreeableremark,or a positive commentthat
activates the sensory processesof a person whom we
shall identify as the sender.
• Stage 2 – Transmission:the stimulus is now
transmitted by the nerve fibers to the brain. Its
perceptionis affectedby the sender’s experience,
environment, or culture.
Process of Oral
Communication• Stage 3– Encoding: The sender’s thoughtsare being encoded into
languagesymbolsor words.
• Stage 4– Speaking: externalization of thoughtsinto an
environment.
• Stage 5– Receiver action: The soundsand symbolsare perceived
bythe receiver. The receiver evaluates whathe hasperceived
throughhiseyes andears.
• Stage 6– Decoding: receiver decodes fromsoundtolanguageand
encodes from thoughtsto words. He will choosea languagethat
thesender will understand.
• Stage 7-responding
Types of Communication
1. IntrapersonalCommunication – communicationthat
occurs within us. Involves understanding andsharing
meaning with ourselves.
2. Interpersonalcommunication– usually happens
between two people.Though it may involve morethan
two people
3. Small-groupcommnication– Involves three or more
people that are formedto solve a problemor arriveat a
certaindecision.
Types of Communication
4. PublicCommunication – takes place when a sender-
receiverconveys a message toan audience. (lecture,
seminar,sermon, convocation,sermons,etc.
5. Mediatedcommunication–message or
communicationis transmitted via some form of
technologicalmedium.(e-mail, telephone,
videoconference,voicemail, etc.
