- 1. Speeches What they are and how to write them.
- 2. By the end of this lesson you will: Understand what a speech is Be familiar with the Purpose and Tone of the speech, as well as the Audience you write for.
- 3. What is a speech? A speech is a long spoken form of communication. It can be: - Planned or unplanned. - Formal or informal - Meant for a big or small audience. A speech is used to: - Thank people - Impart information - Persuade people to do something
- 4. Let’s look at an example of a speech from a father to a son. Taken from the movie, Rocky Balboa, the scene shows a father, who is a famous boxer, advising his son on how to face his problems. His son wants his father to stop boxing, because he is ashamed of it. The son blames his lack of success in life on his father’s fame. He feels that people compare him to his father all the time and that he cannot succeed in life because of it. Listen to what Rocky has to say about life.
- 6. Discussion How many people is Rocky talking to? Is it a formal or informal speech? Was it a planned or unplanned speech?
- 7. Let’s look at an example of a speech given by a presenter to a public audience. In this scene, ex-TV host, Sharon Au, addresses the audience at the rally of Mr Tony Tan. - 9. Format First paragraph – INTRODUCTION Middle paragraphs (three to five paragraphs) – BODY of the text. Last paragraph - CONCLUSION

- 11. BODY OF THE TEXT Fill in the POINTS that the question has asked you come up with. ONE POINT per paragraph.
- 12. CONCLUSION If it is a PERSUASIVE speech, end off by recapping the main points to remind your audience of your point of view. If it is a speech in HONOUR of someone, end off by thanking the person for his service. ALWAYS end off by thanking your audience for listening to you.
- 13. It’s IMPORTANT to capture the attention of the audience and keep them engaged. How? Use of Personal Pronouns Use rhetorical questions Use of anecdotes Use short sentences or sentence patterns to emphasise main points.
