LINDA BARTELT Executive director NEW ERA - NortheastWisconsin Educational Resource Alliance Linda Bartelt is the executive director of NEW ERA, Northeast Wisconsin Educational Resource Alliance, an alliance of 13 higher education colleges in Northeast Wisconsin collaborating on initiatives that enhance the quality of life and economic vitality of the region. A key initiative for NEW ERA in 2014 is the implementation of a bachelor of science in engineering technology – electrical, mechanical and environmental – to build technology driven skills and capabilities in the region’s workforce. Linda has a professional background in business and served in executive leadership roles at Kimberly Clark Corporation, Oshkosh Corporation and the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Center for Community Partnerships. RON “RJ” BERNARD Control center manager RGL –The “What If” Logistics Company Ron Bernard is the control center manager responsible for administrative and inventory control professionals,primarily focused on Georgia-Pacific accounts at RGL (Formerly Leicht Transfer & Storage - celebrating 111 years!) He has served in this capacity for the past nine years. Bernard also worked in the hospitality industry for three years as general manager for Best Western Washington Street Inn. His most significant leadership development was during 21 years of service in the United States Navy. During his naval career, “RJ” was a communication expert on submarines and shore facilities. Ron is committed to volunteerism to promote true citizenship in the community,the nation and the world. He currently serves on the executive board for Partners in Education with the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, board of directors with Club ItaloAmericano and newsletter editor for the Parrothead Club of Green Bay. - 6. JEFF BLUMB Partner Nation Consulting Jeff Blumb possesses nearly three decades of high-level strategic communications experience. He spent a quarter-century working for National Football League teams, including nine seasons as director of public relations for the Green Bay Packers.Blumb has been a partner at Nation Consulting, a Wisconsin-based public strategies firm, since 2011. In that role, he provides media relations, government relations, strategic messaging, branding, crisis communications and business development expertise. Jeff is a 1986 graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor of arts degree in government and international studies (American government emphasis). Jeff serves on the board of directors of ASPIRO, the New North marketing & branding committee,the Public Policy Council andAdvance business expansion & retention committee of the Green BayArea Chamber,the City of Green Bay business advisory board and the ITT Technical Institute business program advisory committee. SUCCESS TIPS In this day of instantaneous electronic communication, it is critical to maintain in-person, one-to-one relationships with key people in your personal and professional lives. The ability to express yourself well – across all mediums – is a key to success. Spend time on it to make sure you do it well. Don’t be afraid to meet people outside of your comfort zone – you never know what you might learn from them and what door they may help open for you. Good work will get recognized on its own merits; those constantly looking for their next opportunity will be noticed, too (and not in a good way). MENTOR
- 7. CHRISTINE DANIELSON Executive director Volunteer Center of Brown Co. Christine Danielson is the executive director of the Volunteer Center Inc. of Brown County.She has served in this capacity for more than 23 years.She wears many hats as the director; day-to-day operations of the center, providing support to the board of directors, writing grants,speaking to groups of all ages and promoting volunteerism as a way to build a stronger community. TheVolunteer Center of Brown County is mobilizing Brown County’s greatest resource— its people—to take actions that make our community stronger! Each year it connects more than 10,000 volunteers to service opportunities in the community. Christine draws on more than 30 years of experience working with nonprofit boards and volunteers to customize training programs for nonprofits, corporations and individuals aimed at strengthening volunteerism and volunteer programs. She is an avid volunteer in the community, currently serving on the Make a Difference Day regional committee, and the National Ski Patrol. She is a Leadership Green Bay graduate, 1986 (the “best” class!) and served on numerous committees in support of the program. Her bachelor of science degree in education is from the University ofWisconsin—Madison. SUCCESS TIPS Volunteering in one’s community is not only necessary but fun! “Crisis and Opportunity” are often partners in one’s life. Start a gratitude list and add to it often. JERYL FLECK Campus director Globe University Jeryl Fleck has served as campus director at Globe University since its grand opening in 2010 and contributes the success of the college to remaining true to its original founder’s simple mission of“We Care.” Globe University’s mission perfectly aligns with Jeryl’s personal values in which family comes first and decisions are always made in the best interest of students. Prior to her role with Globe University—Green Bay,Jeryl served as director of recruitment at ITT Technical Institute—Green Bay from 2007-2010. Having earned her master of business administration degree from Globe University and her undergraduate degrees from UW—Green Bay in German and business administration, it is clear Jeryl has a passion for lifelong learning. Jeryl and her husband, Charlie, are proud parents to Alison andTanner. SUCCESS TIPS Hire smart and help each person understand that you trust that he or she can do his or her job better than anyone. Take time to know your people and respect and acknowledge how they like to give and receive communication. JACQUELINE FRANK Executive director National Railroad Museum More interested in history magazines than Highlights as a child, Jacqueline Frank began working as a tour guide at Heritage Hill at 16 – beginning her career and fueling her passion to utilize museums as a place to discover, interact, and support community and education efforts. After graduating from UW-Green Bay,Jacqueline went on to earn a master’s degree in history at UW-Milwaukee, and began work at the Neville Public Museum. In 2007, Frank was hired by the National Railroad Museum to create their education department. After several years in that role,she was promoted to executive director where she has been in the process of revitalizing the organization with the creation of a new organizational business model, extensive community outreach, international partnerships, and planning for a new museum campus. Jacqueline is deeply involved in the community, working as pro bono consultant for several regional historical societies,a member of the MeyerTheatre marketing committee,a member of the City of Green Bay Historic Preservation Commission, Brown County Historical Society historic preservation committee, Voyageur Magazine editorial committee and a number of City of Green Bay volunteer organizations. She received the Future 15 award from the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce in 2010 and the Outstanding Recent Alumni Award from UW-Green Bay in April 2012. SUCCESS TIPS Ethics matter. Being nice does not necessarily mean being ethical. Leadership does not equal dictatorship. Leaders support, facilitate and work with others for a common vision. Opportunities beget opportunities. JIM GOLEMBESKI Executive director Bay AreaWorkforce Development Board Jim Golembeski is executive director of the Bay Area Workforce Development Board, responsible for the administration of federal job training grants in a 10-county area of northeastern Wisconsin. He has been working in the employment and training field since 1990, before which he worked as a Catholic priest. Jim holds master’s degrees in theology (St. Paul Seminary 1981) and public administration (UW-Oshkosh, 1997). Jim is a co-sponsor of the 2004 NortheastWisconsin Economic Opportunity Study that led to the creation of the NEW North regional economic development organization. He was part of the team that initiated the Northwoods Economic Summit series that began in 2005 and continues annually. He helped create the NEW Manufacturing Alliance in 2007 and the North Coast Marine Manufacturing Alliance in 2011. Jim is active with offender re-entry efforts and a popular speaker at graduation ceremonies in the state prisons.The BayAreaWorkforce Development Board continues to work in close partnership with LakeshoreTechnical College and NortheastWisconsinTechnical College to increase the skill level of our workforce so that our businesses succeed and grow. SUCCESS TIPS You do not have to be perfect and all-knowing. Recognize the areas in which you are knowledgeable and experienced and those areas in which you have little knowledge and experience. Do not be afraid to ask for assistance and go into a learning mode with the latter. Get out of your social comfort zone. Spend time with people different from yourself: culturally, socio-economically and artistically. Learn to appreciate the point of view from other occupations, educational paths and lifestyles. My biggest professional mistakes happened when I acted out of anger. MENTOR
- 11. ROBYN GRUNER Director of external affairs AT&T MENTOR Robyn Gruner is the director of external affairs for AT&T in Northeastern/Central Wisconsin. In her role, Robyn acts as a liaison between AT&T and community and business leaders in 20 counties. Robyn is aWisconsin native and has lived in the Appleton area since 2004. Gruner has worked in the telecommunications and information technology industry for more than 14 years, including 10 years with AT&T. In addition to her work atAT&T,Robyn is deeply involved in the communities she represents. She is a member of the board of directors and executive committee for the New North, Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce and Industry board of directors,Appleton Downtown Inc. board of directors/executive committee, Advance economic development board of directors of the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce and a founding board/executive committee member of C.A.S.A. of the Fox Cities, Inc. PATTY HOEFT Tribal secretary OneidaTribe of Indians ofWisconsin The tribal secretary is one of nine seats elected every three years that make up the tribe’s governing council called the Oneida Business Committee.The tribal secretary has two roles, a non-partisan administrative management leader and a partisan policy-making role. The tribal secretary oversees an office responsible for the tribe’s records management office. Because Oneida has a strong and active direct democracy function, the tribal secretary also manages the citizen petition process and at-large tribal member meetings that meet at least five times per year with more than 1,800 attendees. Patty graduated from West De Pere High School, attended the University of Wisconsin— Oshkosh and graduated from St.Norbert College in 2002 with a bachelor of arts in political science. She has two daughters and is married to Mike Hoeft. She serves on the Wisconsin Coastal Management Council, Alliance for the Great Lakes, International Advisory Native Nations Institute at the University of Arizona and is a trustee for St. Norbert College. SUCCESS TIPS Be competent. Know the rules, expectations and latest skills important in your role and responsibility. Be a catalyst to work toward change, to be future-oriented with a vision and strong persuasive skills to motivate and work through conflict. Be a communicator. Interpersonal relations are critical. Learn to maneuver through personal attacks.Acquire some verbal judo skills. Be self-disciplined over your emotions so you are passionate but not angry. Be a life-longer learner. Be a collaborator. He came to Green Bay in 2001 as the retail and classified advertising manager at the Press- Gazette,became ad director in 2003 and regional ad director in 2005.From 2011-May 2013, he was president & publisher of the St. Cloud (MN) Times andTimes Media. Scott is a two time Gannett President’s Ring winner. He is presently on the Green BayArea Chamber of Commerce board of directors, Greater Green Bay YMCA board of directors and is a volunteer basketball coach. While in St. Cloud he served on the St. Cloud Area Chamber board of directors, the Greater St. Cloud Community Priorities Leadership team, the Greater St.Cloud Economic Development Corporation (GSCDC) business corps team and communications team; and was one of several founding directors of the GSCDC. ANDREA LANDWEHR Executive director of teaching and learning Green Bay Area Public School District Andrea Landwehr currently serves as the executive director of teaching and learning for the Green BayArea Public School District. Prior to becoming the executive director, Andrea was the principal at Red Smith PreK-8 School for five years.This isAndrea’s 25th year as an educator.Previous to becoming an administrator, she served the district as a teacher,reading specialist and literacy coach. Landwehr earned her master’s degree in administrative leadership from Cardinal Stritch University and a master’s degree in reading from the University of Wisconsin—Oshkosh. Additionally, she has a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin— Green Bay and bachelor’s degree in social work from the University ofWisconsin-Oshkosh. His wife, Suzan, is a six- year natural cancer survivor; John now supports Sue’s NurseForHealth.com and Sunflower Projects to bring real healthcare to women. John is a 1976 graduate of Southwest High School. He audited college courses because he couldn’t afford to pay for the credits. He is a founding member of Macco’s Floor Covering Centers Inc., which has grown to six locations, and exited the business after 18 years.The company is now one of the top 30 retail flooring companies in the country. Today, John serves as president of Macco Financial Group, Inc., with clients in 15 states. He holds series 7, 9, 10, 63 securities licenses and has been a member of the Raymond James Executive Council since 2009. MIKE MCQUADE Director of human resources JBS Mike McQuade is a graduate of the University ofWisconsin—Milwaukee School of Business Administration where he earned a bachelor of business administration and majored in human resources management. He is a 10-year human resources professional with a current focus in recruiting/retention, talent development and labor relations (with administration of CBA). He has union partnerships with UAW and UFCW at the local level and has labor relations for 2,300+ hourly employees representing more than 30 countries and 25 different languages. He began his career with Case New Holland in Racine,Wis., where he spent five years in roles including human resource generalist and human resources/labor relations. McQuade has spent the past five years with JBS in pork and beef facilities in Worthington, Minn., Marshalltown, Iowa, and Green Bay,Wis., where he serves as the director of human resources and oversees a staff of 15 members.
