SQ3R is a 6 step reading method analogous to a 6 course French meal. The 6 steps are: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review (immediate), and Review (periodic). Research has found that students who implement the full SQ3R method by taking structured notes and testing themselves immediately after reading perform better on subsequent exams compared to students who do not use SQ3R or use it in an unstructured way. The SQ3R method is effective for increasing retention, especially when students spend 2 hours per chapter and follow a guided study process from reading to testing themselves.
