Where In The World Is Our Study Of Geography?
Geography is the study of the earth and the way people live on it and use it. It’s a study of place and space.Geography includes the location of different places and people AND the study of that land and those people! When we look at geography we look at an entire area including the land forms, the people, the animals, culture, movement, agriculture, etc. What Is Geography?
THE FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHYWhen we look at Geography, we study these five different areas:Location: Where! Location includes longitude, latitude, etc. Place: Place includes the physical and human features of an area.Human-Environment Interaction: How do we affect our environment and visa-versa?Movement: How are people, goods, ideas, etc. exchanged and moved within a region?Regions: Includes areas that share one or more features, both physical and human.
1. LOCATIONWhere are we?Absolute LocationA latitude and longitude (global location) or a street address (local location).Paris France is 48o North Latitude and 2o East Longitude. The White House is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Relative LocationDescribed by landmarks, time, direction or distance. From one place to another.Go 1 mile west on main street and turn left for 1 block. You are Here
Finding LocationAbsolute LocationEvery place on earth has an absolute location which is described by longitude and latitude. Please turn to page 64 in your Level E “Maps, Globes, and Graphs” text. The earth is divided by imaginary lines known as “meridians.” The Prime Meridian is a line connecting the North and South Poles. The area east of the Prime Meridian is known as the “Eastern Hemisphere.” What do you think the area west of the PM called? The lines of longitude go “long” or up and down. The lines of latitude are like rungs one a “ladder” and go from side to side.Let’s work on the questions on page 76 together.
2. PLACEWhat is a place like? How can you describe it?Human CharacteristicsWhat are the main languages, customs, and beliefs. How many people live, work, and visit a place. What clothing do the people wear? What do they eat?Physical CharacteristicsLandforms (mountains, rivers, etc.), climate, vegetation, wildlife, soil, etc.
3. Human-Environment InteractionHow do we interact with our environment? We depend upon it! Consider how we would we grow food, travel, even walk without our environment.
We adapt. We wear coats in the winter and use gloves when we pick up snow.
We change it. We build bridges over rivers and buildings to live in.
How do you interact with your environment? CLIMATEWhat type’s of climates exist in the world? Turn to page 71 of Level E.Now turn to page 92-93. Let’s identify the type of climate for each continent.Think Fast! How is our interaction with our environment effected by the place in which we live and the climate that exists there? Please give us an example!
4. MovementHumans- How do we move from place to place? How did you arrive in your new home?
Products- How do we exchange products from person to person, town to town, country to country?
