St. Mark was the first Pope of Alexandria and wrote the Gospel of Mark. He traveled to Egypt to preach the gospel and converted many to Christianity, angering idol worshippers. The idol worshippers tortured and martyred St. Mark by dragging him through the streets until he died. Later, his body was taken to Italy but was returned to Egypt under Pope Kyrillos VI. St. Mark is honored as the first Pope and patron saint of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt.
