St. Mark was born in Cyrene, North Africa and later moved to Jerusalem where he met Jesus and witnessed his miracles. He went on to preach the gospel in Europe and North Africa, establishing the first churches in Egypt. In Alexandria, St. Mark performed a miracle to heal a shoemaker named Anianus, who became the first Christian convert in Egypt. Anianus and his family were baptized and many more people in Alexandria soon believed, establishing the first church in Egypt led by St. Mark. St. Mark ordained priests and deacons and wrote the Gospel of St. Mark for the new Egyptian Christians.
