5 Easy Ways to Get Started with
Scrum at Home
Stacey	Ackerman
Why Scrum at Home?
•  	Life	is	busy!
•  	It’s	not	my	job!
•  	What	do	I	have	to	do	again?
Step 1: Timebox
•  Just	do	it!
•  Build	in	time	each	day	for	chores.
•  Set	the	timer	{we	did	30	minutes}.
•  Intrinsically	motivate	{more	time	for	play!}
•  Reward	success	{did	I	hear	ice	cream?}
Step 2: Sprint Planning
•  Work	it	into	a	time	you	are	already
together.
•  Explain	why	you	are	doing
•  Coach	them	on	breaking	down	work.
•  Let	them	decide	how	much	work	they
can	commit	to.
•  Don’t	make	it	too	formal	or	institute
too	many	rules.
Step 3: Visualize the Work

•  Work	it	into	a	time	you	are
already	together.
•  Explain	why	you	are	doing
•  Coach	them	on	breaking	down
work.
•  Let	them	decide	how	much
work	they	can	commit	to.
•  Don’t	make	it	too	formal	or
institute	too	many	rules.
Step 4: Sprint Review

•  Let	the	kids	know	ahead	of	time	when
you	expect	work	to	be	done.
•  Have	basic	acceptance	criteria.
•  Have	them	‘demo’	their	jobs	for	you.
•  Accept	the	work	as	‘done’.
Step 5: Retrospective
•  Scrum	is	for	parents	too!
•  You	don’t	have	to	switch
jobs	all	the	time.
•  Share	a	common	goal.
There	will	always	be	a
skeptic	–	be	patient!
•  Don’t	over	commit.
•  Don’t	give	up	if	it’s	not	a
perfect	process.
We Have a High
Performing Team!

Scrum at Home: Role Playing
•  Get	into	Scrum	‘families’	at	your	table.
•  Establish	roles:	parents	vs.	kids
•  Discuss	the	biggest	challenges	with	managing	your
household	(real	or	hypothetical).
•  Establish	your	first	sprint	goal.
•  Plan	your	first	sprint	by	writing	tasks	on	sticky
notes.
•  Decide	how	your	family	will	manage	the	work.
•  Share	with	the	group!
