Purpose of air conditioner is to cool the area
The way cooling happens is different for inverter and non-inverter ACs
Non-inverter AC has fixed cooling capacity and fixed input wattage
Inverter AC has varying cooling capacity and input wattage

Star and Labeling Program
EER System
Refers to the ratio of the cooling capacity to the power input
Cooling capacity (in watts) : Power input (in watts)
Energy Efficiency is measured by calculating the power
it consumes to cool a room when it's 35 degree
Centigrade outside
Specifications to check while buying an air
conditioner:

Star and Labeling Program
Calculating EER
For FTC50PRV16:
Cooling Capacity (CC) = 5220 Watts
Power Input (PI) = 1605 Watts
EER = CC / PI
= 5220/1605
= 3.25
EER is the cooling capacity divided by power consumed
Example:
As per current BEE
specifications, it is 3-star air-
conditioning unit
Star and Labeling Program
ISEER System
This system has been introduced on a voluntary basis for inverter AC since July 2015
Refers to the ratio of the total annual amount of heat remove from the indoor air when operated for cooling
in active mode to the total annual amount of energy consumed by the AC during the same period
Temperature does not remain the same throughout the
year
As the temperature varies in different seasons, the
amount of cooling required also varies.
The usage (in hours per day) would also vary as per the
seasons

Summary
Star labeling is the number of stars displayed on the energy label
Higher the number of stars, better is the energy efficiency of an air
conditioner
The standard for star labeling is decided by Bureau of Energy
Efficiency (BEE) set up by the Government of India.
EER refers to the ratio of the cooling capacity (in watts) to the
power input (in watts).
The higher the EER rating, the more efficient the air conditioner.
The star label design as decided by BEE, includes 3 criteria to be checked:
placement of the stars, material and shape used, and colors to be used.

Editor's Notes

  • #2: Splash
  • #3: Welcome to Star and Labeling Program The purchase decision of customers are largely driven by the on-going as well as future expected benefits to be incurred from the product. Sometimes, customers overlook the price of the item to be paid, owing to the benefits or features the product has to offer. When buying an air conditioner, the customer usually focuses on its cooling capacity in Tons. However, these days, purchase decision of customers also depend upon the star rating of the AC. Star rating reflects the energy efficiency of the products. The more the star rating, the more is the efficiency of an Air conditioner. Click Next.
  • #4: Training Objectives At the end of this module you will be able to identify star rating in air conditioners and list parameters required for star rating. You will also be able to calculate Energy Efficiency Ratio of air conditioners. Click next
  • #5: Introduction to Star Labeling Star labeling is the number of stars displayed on the energy label. The available stars could be between one and five. Higher the number of stars, better is the energy efficiency of an air conditioner. Star labeling determines energy efficiency of electronic products for home use, such as window and split air-conditioners. Star labeling is one of the most cost effective policy tools to provide the consumer an informed choice about the energy saving. Click next to explore more about the star labeling system.
  • #6: Significance of Star Rating The star labeling scheme is expected to impact the energy savings. At the same time it allows to position domestic industry in international markets where it is mandatory to follow the standards for energy efficiency. In India, system of star rating was introduced in India in 2010 and mandated in 2012. Ever since then, it is being revised periodically. The standard for star labeling is defined by Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of power, set up by the Government of India. Click next to know more about this bureau. Click next
  • #7: Introduction to BEE The Government of India set up Bureau of Energy Efficiency, also referred to as 'BEE' or 'Bureau' on 1st March 2002 under the provisions of the EC Act, 2001. The mission of the Bureau is to assist in developing policies and strategies with a thrust on self-regulation and market principles, within the overall framework of the EC Act, 2001 with the primary objective of reducing energy intensity of the Indian economy. The Standards and Labeling Scheme (S&L) is one of the major thrust areas of BEE. It also aims at reducing energy intensity of the Indian economy, for which every year, BEE releases energy efficiency ratio range for star ratings, based on some parameters. Parameters to be tested for star labeling an air conditioner could be broadly put under two categories. One is, energy consumption and the other is cooling capacity. Click Next to learn about the systems used for star labeling.
  • #8: EER and ISEER Systems for Star Labeling The purpose of air conditioner is to cool the area. But the way cooling happens is different for inverter and non-inverter ACs. This is because Non-inverter AC has fixed cooling capacity and fixed input wattage. Whereas Inverter AC has varying cooling capacity and input wattage. Thus technology used for star labeling is also different for them. The system used for star labeling in non-inverter AC is EER or COP system. EER stands for Energy efficiency ratio and COP stands for Coefficient of performance. The system used for star labeling in inverter AC is ISEER system, which stands for Indian seasonal energy efficiency ratio. Lets discuss about them in detail. Click Next.
  • #9: EER System EER refers to the ratio of the cooling capacity (in watts) to the power input (in watts). The higher the EER rating, the more efficient the air conditioner. As per current standards, energy efficiency of an air-conditioner is measured by calculating the power it consumes to cool a room when it's 35 degree Centigrade outside. However, for a layman it becomes somewhat difficult to interpret this. Therefore, it is important for them to check few specifications while buying air conditioner. These specifications include cooling capacity of the air conditioner in Watts, power consumed by the air conditioner in Watts and the star rating as displayed on the air conditioner. As we know star rating is based on EER, let us see how to calculate it. Click Next.
  • #10: Calculating EER EER is the cooling capacity divided by power consumed. Now, suppose for a particular model of AC, let’s say FTC50PRV16, cooling capacity is 5220 watts and power input is 1605 watts. Then its EER would be cooling capacity divided by power input. That means, 5220 divided by 1605. Hence, EER would be 3.25. The star rating as per BEE would be 3, and the same should be displayed on the label.
  • #11: ISEER System This system has been introduced on a voluntary basis for inverter AC since July 2015. The basic theory behind ISEER is that the temperature does not remain the same throughout the year. As the temperature varies in different seasons, the amount of cooling required also varies. Also the usage (in hours per day) would vary as per the seasons. Thus ISEER refers to the ratio of the total annual amount of heat removed from the indoor air when operated for cooling in active mode to the total annual amount of energy consumed by the AC during the same period. Click Next.
  • #12: Types of Products In general air conditioners are categorized into two types that are room air and sky air. Room air includes wall mounted AC whereas Sky air includes ceiling mounted, ceiling suspended or floor standing AC. These further can be categorized into Inverter and Non-inverter AC. Lets now discuss the star rating for these products. Click Next.
  • #13: Star Rating for Room Air ACs The tables for room air inverter and non-inverter ACs are shown on the screen from January 2016. As per EER, for non-inverter AC, star rating for 1 star is already dropped from January 2016. For inverter AC, voluntary labeling program started in July 2015 as per ISEER. In future, star tables will be merged for both inverter and non-inverter AC from January 2018 to December 2019. Click Next.
  • #14: Star Rating for Sky Air ACs The tables for sky air inverter and non-inverter ACs are shown on the screen from January 2016. The labeling program was made mandatory for non-inverter Ceiling mounted, Ceiling suspended & Floor standing AC from January 2016. But for inverter AC , it will be made mandatory from January 2018 as per ISEER. In future, star tables will be merged for both inverter and non-inverter ACs from January 2018 to December 2019. There is a particular design criteria of displaying the stars on the label, as decided by BEE. Click next to know more about the star label design.
  • #15: Star Label Design Criteria The star label design as decided by BEE, includes 3 criteria to be checked. These are placement of the stars, material and shape used, and colors to be used. Click each criteria to know more. <Audio for Placement> The label shall be attached as a swing tag on the front of the unit or display front. For units not on display, the label should be attached to the exterior of the packaging.   <Audio for Material and Shape> If the label is to be displayed on the unit, it should be of durable cardboard or be self-adhesive and shall be cut to one of the outlines. <Audio for Colors> The label shall be printed as per the specification given in the image. Click next
  • #16: Star Label Design Sample The screen shows a sample of the star label design. Have a look. The label shall display declared values for appliance and its type; brand, model name, number and year of manufacturing; rated capacity in watts; rated power in Watts; rated EER; variable output compressor as present or not and heat pump present or not. Click next
  • #17: Summary In this module you learnt that Star labeling is the number of stars displayed on the energy label. Higher the number of stars, better is the energy efficiency of an air conditioner. The standard for star labeling is decided by Bureau of Energy Efficiency set up by the Government of India. EER refers to the ratio of the cooling capacity (in watts) to the power input (in watts). The higher the EER rating, the more efficient the air conditioner. The star label design as decided by BEE, includes 3 criteria to be checked, which are placement of the stars, material and shape used, and colors to be used. Click next
