Surviving and Thriving Meeting the Challenge Flood in Bangkok 2011
While RIS was not physically open I studied everyday. Part of the time we were in Bangkok but when the water began to rise we went else where. I continued to do my online studies.
I worked on my art portfolio.
Where did you go? As the water rose in Bangkok my family travel to several different locations to stay dry. Vietnam Cambodia Kanchanaburi
What did you do? In addition to keeping up with my online studying my classroom moved with me. I was able to learn history and culture from the areas I was staying in. While in Cambodia, I learned first hand that Thailand was not the only country that has been affected by flooding. I traveled miles in boats through floated rice patties and even a flooded forest. I also visited Angkor Wat, where I was absorbed in Angkor history as well as the ancient architecture and sculptures.
Why did you go? We had the resources to leave and felt we should go while we still could.
How have you been impacted by the flooding in Thailand? It was hard to find water and food. It hard to get around because the water was up to our knees. It was hard to get around because the roads were flooded. Some people took advantage of the situation by selling boats, boots and water proof backpacks.
People continued selling fruits in the flooded streets. Water has been added to this fruit stand...Drinking water is hard to come by.
How has the flooding affected your daily life? I had to evacuate from home. Before I drank water I had to make sure it was boiled so I wouldn't be drinking bacteria and other stuff in the water. We had to buy water and can food to prepare in case the electricty would be cut off.
We are in the hotel in one room instead of a house. This one room is where I eat, sleep, study and watch movies.
What have you learned about how the flooding has impacted Thailand and Thai people? I learned that people had to move and evaculated from their homes, park their cars on the bridges, or any high spot they could find, and that some people don't have clean water to drink, food to eat, or dry places to sleep. My family is lucky compared to some.
Where have you gotten your information from? I read info online, in the newpaper, and heard news on the radio and TV. I also read magazines and got information from friends and family.
Flood hits Bangkok Newspaper!

Homes will need to be cleaned up and rebuilt. Roads will need to be repaired. Electricity and water lines will need to be rebuilt.
I can donate more clothes and volunteer to assist in Red Cross missions. I can help clean up my own neighborhood.
What can you do personally to help? I can join the red cross relief teams and help my family and my neighbors.

What can the RIS community do to help? RIS can Organize relief team to volunteer at the Red Cross Raise funds for flood victims
