CDs and DVDs are optical storage media that can store computer data and are portable but files can break easily. CD-RWs and DVD-RWs allow updating of information and rewriting data multiple times, while CD-Rs and DVD-Rs can only be written to once. DVD-RAM provides very fast access and can be rewritten over 100,000 times. Blu-ray and HD DVD were competing high definition optical formats, with Blu-ray having the largest storage capacity. Solid state, memory sticks, and flash cards provide portable removable storage of files at the expense of higher costs and lower capacities than optical disks.
