Storage Devices
Introduction Of Optical Data Storage
 Optical storage is the storage of data on an optically readable
medium.
 Data is recorded by making marks in a pattern that can be
read back with the aid of light, usually a beam of laser light
precisely focused on a spinning optical disc
 An older example of optical storage that does not require the
use of computers, is microform.
 There are other means of optically storing data and new
methods are in development.
Optical Storage-History
In 1983  CD and CD-ROM.
In 1996  DVD-ROM and DVD-R.
In 2002  BLU-RAY.
TYPES OF STORAGE
Hard Disk Drive.
Solid State Storage.
Flash Memory.
Magnetic Storage.
Optical Storage Device like CD,DVD.
HARD DISK
A Hard Disk drive is a data storage device
used for storing and retrieving digital
Information using rapidly rotating disks.
An HDD consists of one or more rigid rapidly
rotating disks with magnetic heads arranged
on a moving actuator arm to read and write
data to the surfaces.
SOLID STATE DRIVE (SSD)
Data storage drive using Integrated circuit
assemblies as memory to storage
persistently.
SSD technology uses electronic interfaces
compatible with traditional block
input/output hard disk drives.
USB FLASH DRIVE
A USB flash refers to a type of computer
technology that stores data.
Flash memory is used in many different
appliances including memory card , PDAs.
COMPACT DISK
 Compact Disk(CD) is a circular disk of diameter of 120 millimeters(4.7 inch)

Optical Storage Devices
• They store data on the refractive surface of
the disc so that it can be read by a beam of
laser light.
• A laser uses concentrated ,narrow beam of
light directed by lens ,prisms and mirror.
• The tight focus is possible because all the
light is in same wavelength
• To store data ,the disk’s metal surface is covered
with tiny dents (pits) and flat spots (lands)
,which cause light to be reflected differently.
• When an optical drive shines light into the pit
,the light cannot be reflected .this represent bit
value ‘0’. A land reflects light back to source
which represent bit value ’1’.

 DVD-ROM
 CD-R
 CD-RW
 photo CD
Other Optical Storage Devices
 A CD-recordable drive lets to record your own
CD’s ,but data cannot be overwritten.
 A CD-rewritable lets to record your own CD’s
and can be overwritten.
 Photo CD technology is used to store digital
photographs.
