This document provides step-by-step instructions for displaying strike and dip data in ArcGIS 10. It describes how to: 1. Import XY data from an Excel or CSV file with columns for x, y, dip, and strike coordinates into ArcMap. 2. Export the data as a shapefile layer. 3. Adjust the symbology to use a geology style that displays overturned bedding and rotate it to match the strike direction. 4. Optionally label the dip values oriented to the strike direction.

- 2. STRIKE AND DIP IN ARCGIS 10 02/27/2016 AUTHOR: ATIQA IJAZ KHAN 1 STRIKE AND DIP IN ARCGIS STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE: 1. Prepare the data in excel file with extension “xls” (as per till now ArcGIS 10x only support up to MS Office 2010) or CSV text file. 1.1. With columns of: x, y, dip, and strike. 2. Open Arc Map, go to File > Add Data > Add xy Data, as XY excel columns in respective XY fields. 2.1. Before OK, if to adjust the coordinate system, if not already selected before, go to Edit > PCS or GCS as per required. 3. From ‘Table of Contents’, ‘Export’ the added data into Shapefile by ‘Right Clicking’ the file. 4. After that if prompted to add data as a layer in Arc Map, click ‘Yes’. 5. To adjust its Symbology; 5.1. Its symbol can be adjusted by > Properties > Symbology > Features > Advance > Style Preferences > Geology 24k ( Check this option) > Over turned bedding – showing strike and dip in top direction (Choose this option as symbol). STRIKE AND DIP IN ARCGIS 10 02/27/2016 AUTHOR: ATIQA IJAZ KHAN 2 5.1.1.And to search ‘Dip’ or ‘Strike’ under the “Symbol selector”, choose “Strike and Dip of Bedding”; or any other style that suits. 5.2. Adjust its size. (Increase up to 30). 5.3. Go back to Symbology > Advance, right click on it, go to > Rotation, from the drop-down menu, choose Strike > Geographic ( Check this option) > OK. 6. Now to adjust labels, if required; 6.1. Go to Label > label this feature ( Check this option) > from drop down menu choose Dip, to adjust its orientation, go to Placement properties > Place label at an angle ( Check this option) > from drop down menu choose Strike > Geographic ( Check this option) > OK. 7. Now to adjust the label style, go to Properties > Labels > Label Styles > Properties > Symbol Properties > Edit Symbol: 7.1. Angle = 90º 7.2. Vertical alignment = Bottom 7.3. Horizontal alignment = Full 7.4. OK
