Structuralism
By Meibis González
Definitions
• Structuralism is an intellectual movement to the
human sciences with effects on linguistics,
sociology and other fields as well as philosophy
which tries to analyze a specific field as a system
of interrelated parts which have meaning.
• Structuralism is the study of the structure of the
mind. The mind is formed by associations of
ideas.
Definitions
• Structuralism underlies on the concepts that
every system possesses a structure that
determines the position of every element of a
whole.
Time Frame
• Structuralism in Europe developed in the early 1900s,
mainly in France and Russian Empire. It developed in the
structural linguistics of Ferdinand de Saussure and the
subsequent Prague, Moscow and Copenhagen schools of
linguistics
Advocates
1. Ferdinand Sassure
2. Leonard Bloomfield
3. Louis Hjelmslev in Denmark and Alf
Sommerfelt in Norway
4.In France Antoine Meillet and Émile
Benveniste and Claude Lévi-Strauss's
Characteristics of Structuralism
In Linguistics
1. all of the parts to
learning English are
interlaced.
2. they have meaning
according to the way
they interrelate.
3. If this parts are in
isolation, they don´t
have the same meaning
either.
4. to make sense, the parts
must be working
together.
Structuralism in
Language Learning
1. Meaning is determined by the context where
the relationship among the parts take place.
2. an emphasis on understanding grammatical
structure such as sentence structure, patterns
of sentences and appropriate grammar and
composition.
3. focus on four main skills: listening, speaking,
reading and writing.
Structuralism in Language Learning
4. Language forms are seen as a sign system.
5. To learn new structures it is basic to find the
relationship between the new and the previous
knowledge (find appropriate relationships).
6. Reading and writing develop from the
comprehension of the basic underlying grammatical
structures of the sytem.
Strengths
1. Helps young English
learners grasp grammar in
an easier way to learn
2. support proper use of the
language in verbal and
written expression.
3. Knowledge of foundation of
the basic structure before
complex grammar.
4. Students discover learning
(inductive method goes
from the parts to the whole
comprehension).
Weaknesses
• 1. As students grow up it becomes more
difficult to learn using this structure
because they have already learned in a
different way.
• 2. Creativity in writing tends to wait until
the students master the structures of the
language.
Conclusions
1. Understanding the structures of the
language is basic for understanding
more complex forms.
2. Its advocators come from different
fields such as architecture,
economics, education, anthropology
and others.
3. The context plays a major role in
determining the meaning of the
structures and the way they related.
4. It promotes students discovery of
learning.
