Student-centered classrooms and cooperative learning activities were explored through a series of exercises. In the first activity, students thought of words related to student-centered learning and shared with partners. The second had students line up alphabetically by "magic word". Later, students worked in groups with assigned roles on a tangram puzzle and discussed constructive behaviors. They also stood in talking circles to share benefits of group work like developing social skills and taking ownership of learning. A jigsaw activity had students read sections of text in expert groups and share findings.
