as I had borrowed Rs. 5000/- from my senior

Thereafter, I met my guide Chakradhar, and he
asked me about the project deliverables /out-
come. I made it clear to him, that I can tell you
about that only after I come back from a visit to
Little Rann of Kutch, and after doing some more
research on the topic, as I was confused due
to lack of information on the topic. Unless I go
there and gain first hand knowledge about the
condition, and requirements, it wasn’t possible
for me to decide on the project outcome. He
agreed to that, and also suggested me to get
a bonafide certificate from the college (NID),
to avoid any complications and obstructions in
your project.

ing which make me walk all the while from one
salt pan worker’s home to another’s. Although,
my heart cried out after seeing the condition
of these salt pan workers, because it was these
same eyes of mine who earlier had seen people
throw away the disliked food, who were made
to see these people literally longing to see the
very sight of food.
After observing the way these salt pan workers
live, I realized the importance of LIFE.

I started on the project work by making the
map of LRK. I called up Bharatbhai and asked
him for a basic map of LRK. He told me that
he is coming to Ahmedabad the next day, and
will bring the map along with him. I visited the
AHRM office the next day, and met Bharatbhai
for the map. I also purchased a map of Gujarat
district from the local bookstore. I studied these
maps, and also had a look at other maps on
the internet on what all things constitute in the
making of a map like –

* Legends, and how they are made.
* What type of fonts are to be used
* Size of the maps
* How to use different colors
* In this way, I went ahead and made a map of
Little Rann of Kutch.

I visited various printing press located in
Ahmedabad. First I visited “Patel Digital” and
got the information regarding :-

I started with my journey to the LRK with
my friend Alvaro on his two wheeler early
morning. That day was etched in my mem-

full of quicksand and it was sinking deeper
and deeper into the pothole ! We were damn
scared, and were trying everything we could
to get out of that situation. Luckily, one of the
local people saw us and came running for help.

I met my senior Sanjay in the morning, and
discussed about the printing papers, layout-
ing, etc. I realized how to use the grid system
during layouting, and the fact that it improves
the alignment, formatting, and layout system of
all the pages........................................................

The reasons for making a simple layout were
that my topic was based on the greivances of
the salt pan workers, and wanted to reflect the
condition as it is in the report. Also, if you take
any government report / book, they all follow
a very simple and straightforward layout, and
since I eventually had planned to submit it to
the government, so it was justified further.
My guide had also approved the layout, so I
decided to stick to it.

T his day proved to be a doom’s day for me,
as I accidently happened to delete all the
data ( photographs etc) that I had collected

going home and celebrating Diwali with my
family.

weak in my knees. All my efforts, everything
went in vain. But I had to do something to
compensate this loss. I couldn’t sleep that
night, and decided to go back to LRK the next
morning !

reached LRK, only to repeat my last visit’s act
again. I took the photographs again, had discus-
sions with the people of LRK, and that too with-
out a vehicle! Yes, I had walked whole day for
collecting the lost information, and returned
back to NID the next day.

I came back to NID, and resumed my project
again. I began with preparing the Salt produc-
tion graphics.
All these graphics that I had prepared, was a
result of my hand-work, because the salt that
was being prepared here was a traditional
process, and very crude in nature, using only
hands and feet. Also, I didn’t want to give it
an artificial look to the graphics by taking help
of computers, because I wanted to reflect the
nature of the LRK, which consisted a messed
up, cracked and overall dirty feel to it.

I decided to use “Adobe Caslon Pro” font, since
it was a serif font. Besides that, Caslon is a
good font for magazine text, and is used com-
monly in journals, books and even as a corpo-
rate typeface. It is ideally suited for text sizes
ranging from 6 to 14 points.
I had used size 12 size font, because the target
audience of my book was primarily elderly
