Discussion on Learning Styles
10 Tips for Better Studying
6
Study Over a Longer Period of Time
• Cramming all of your studying into the night before does not better
prepare you, in fact it gives you more anxiety about the test/quiz and
you do not absorb the information. Spread your time wisely
– Set up short study times consistently each day
– Go through part of the information in that time in order to get
a grasp on the information as a whole
– Two days before the test review all of the information
– As you do this note areas you are struggling in
– The day before the test go over the areas you are struggling in
– The morning of the test do one more quick read through of your
notes in order to be as prepared as possible!
7
Plan When You Are Going to Study
• As human beings we plan everything from waking up, to seeing
friends, to going to bed. Be sure to fit a study time in there too!
– Planning your study sessions guarantees that it will fit in a day
– Don’t plan them as the last thing you are going to do before bed
because you will end up going to sleep rather than studying
– Put a start and end time so you know you are blocking off the
appropriate amount of time.
8
Study at the Same Time
• If you study at the same time every day it will become a part of your
regular schedule and not something that bothers you to do.
– Planning your study sessions guarantees that it will fit in a day
– You will be more mentally prepared for each study session
– You will get more accomplished because of that preparation
9
Each Study Time Should Have a Clear Goal
• If you study with a goal in mind you are more likely to get that goal
accomplished.
– Make sure to make the goal subject specific
– Example: If you are studying Vocabulary you should try to
memorize 30 vocabulary words in one hour, and if you are
studying History you should try to read the chapter in twenty
minutes. Don’t let the subjects intertwine on your goals
10
Don’t Procrastinate
• It is something we have all done. We can always find something
more interesting than studying, homework, or work in general, but
procrastination is not the answer!
11
Start with the Most Difficult Subject First
• If your most difficult work is out of the way, the rest will be so much
easier!
– You will be able to get more done on your difficult subject
because you are not yet mentally exhausted.
– Even if the subject takes a lot out of you, you know you have
completed the most difficult subject and the worst is behind you
for the rest of the study session.
12
Always Review Your Notes Before Starting an Assignment
• Be sure to take good notes in class so that you will be able to
reference them rather than looking through the book for every
answer.
– Reviewing your notes first helps put the information you need at
the forefront of your mind so you don’t get as easily distracted.
– Reviewing your notes will help you be able to complete your
assignment thoroughly.
13
Make Sure
• Be sure to take good notes in class so that you will be able to
reference them rather than looking through the book for every
answer.
– Reviewing your notes first helps put the information you need at
the forefront of your mind so you don’t get as easily distracted.
– Reviewing your notes will help you be able to complete your
assignment thoroughly.
