SUBJECT INFORMATION GATEWAY IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (SIGIT): AN INTRODUCTION Mohamed Musthafa. K Project Assistant DST Research Project Dept. of Library and Information Science Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh 03 December, 2011
Subject Gateway is an organized collection of resources on a given subject along with a retrieval mechanism. Subject Gateways is allowing links amongst electronic resources stored on servers dispersed geographically on distant locations. The gateways sites redirect a user to the holders of the original digital material. Subject gateways are one such tool designed for a specific user group with interests in a specific subject area. The subject gateways emerged in response to the challenge of resource discovery in a fast developing internet environment in the early and mid 1990’s. Due to the emergence of the network information retrieval systems (Gopher, WWW, Archive, netfirst, etc.) and access protocols (ftp, gopher, telnet, http, etc.) innovative information technologies and services emerge.
SIGIT stands for Subject Information Gateway in Information Technology SIGIT is a first full-fledged subject information gateway exclusively in the field of Information Technology. SIGIT provides easy access to quality information on the Internet related to IT to meet the information requirements of the scientific and academic community in the digital era.
Department of Science & Technology ( DST ), Government of India, a nodal department for organizing, coordinating and promoting S&T activities in the country, granted fund for SIGIT. Aligarh Muslim University has kindly agreed to maintain and keep SIGIT updated after completing the project.
Designed and developed at the DLISc, AMU, under the supervision of Dr. Naushad Ali. PM, Principal Investigator, an eminent LIS researcher, He has successfully completed and running many minor and major research projects granted by different funding agencies like UGC, ICSSR, DST. The Research Team include Mr. Salahudheen E & Mohammad Shakir (Project Fellows), Mr. Mohamed Musthafa (Project Assistant)
Links to e-journals, e-books, theses and dissertations (ETDs), databases, bibliographies, book reviews, conference proceedings, encyclopedias, dictionaries, software, weblogs & listservs, research projects, courses, schools and their curriculum, fellowships & grants, research centers and laboratories, professional associations and societies, companies, products, patents, IPR, Copyright personalities, jobs, training programmes, forthcoming seminars/conferences/ workshops, And more ..

Selection of high quality information sources is a continuous process affected by the users' need, availability of resources and also the format of resources and the new technology in developing the format of resources. Ensure the value, level and usefulness of the source and also ascertain that no such source is being duplicated or already existing in the database. Match the subject area of the source with the list of subjects covered in the scope policy of the gateway.
The CMP is to provide guidelines for consistently developing the collection, evaluation and maintenance of IT sources to be linked in SIGIT This policy shall direct orderly selection, verification, maintenance and provision of access not only to collection developers (i.e. librarians /information professionals and /or subject experts), but also to IT scholars / users who would have access to the collection. This will be a link of collection of high quality information sources available on the Internet either in the form of full text or in the form of content /index and/or abstract or just the bibliographical details of the document with brief description and pointing towards its location in social science libraries in India.
However, efforts have been made to make it a fully linked collection and pointing to the document available on the Internet. The objectives of collection management policy are linked with the objectives of Information Gateway of IT i.e. to provide fast and easy access to high quality relevant information technology news and information to IT scientists working in academia, business, government, NGOs and others.
The editing and maintenance of the collection shall be done from time to time keeping in view the value, availability, usefulness, accuracy, stability, time sensitiveness, change of title of a journal, change of format of information. To verify the freshness of already available documents and services and also their links. It is very important to pay special attention to the accuracy of the description of the record on which the user rely and also the accuracy of the spellings of a subject keywords adopted.
Identify the content of the source to ascertain the quality of information Identify the statement of the purpose, scope, limitations and intended user stated within the source and does the resource fulfill the stated purpose. Identify the subject area and the types of material covered e.g. full text journals or books, bibliographical database, abstract database, directory database, library catalogue, publisher catalogue, archive catalogue, and CD-ROM catalogue etc. Check the language of the source. Browse the source itself to determine the comprehensiveness, level of details, retrospective coverage, depth and limitations of that particular subject area. Is the information really full text or just the bibliographical details? Is the title informative?
Identify the contact details i.e. address, phone number and e-mail address for author and publisher to support claims of authorship, sponsorship etc. Identify the address of the site at the end of web address i.e. .ac .edu .org .gov which determine the quality, authority and reputation of the source. Identify the HTML page of the information source by looking into its <HEAD> </HEAD> section whether metadata containing all the relevant keywords is given which ensure effective indexing and retrieval and thus provide reliable access to information sources. Identify the form of Information which relate to medium, design and presentation of the resource including the ease of navigation and provision of user support etc. However resources with valuable information content should not be rejected on form criteria alone.
Search engines. Meta search engines. Online directories. Websites related to information Technology. Reference and information sources on IT on Web. Online abstracting and indexing sources.
This phase deals with the overall planning, designing of site layout, coding, and testing of the web site. The website is divided into two parts server side technology and client/user site technology. The following methods have been used to design the two parts of the site. Server side, the code is executed on the Web server. Some types of code include: _ Asp, Java, CGI. Software; Joomla
The codes written using any of the above mentioned technologies are required to be mounted on the Web to provide access to information through a Web server. A Web server is a programme that runs on a computer contained in a networked environment. The Web server watches the Internet connection and waits for a request from the browser for HTML documents. When it receives a request, it locates the HTML documents based on an IP address and sends them back to the browsers that requested them.
The specialists who are directly or indirectly concerned with IT as a subject or an activity. scientists, academicians, researchers, authors, students, etc. who are engaged in IT based study/research work.
Subject Information Gateway in Information Technology (SIGIT) is the first attempt to develop a full-fledged subject information gateway exclusively in the field of Information Technology. We hope the SIGIT will be an effective and efficient tool for research and one-stop source of information IT and IT related areas. And the SIGIT is a contribution of AMU for the world of information and knowledge.
