Super Sleuth!!
- 1. Super Sleuth!! Task: To become a Super Detective- solving clues, fighting crime and writing snappy detective stories.
- 2. Starter What is a detective? What does a detective do? Can you think of any famous detectives, either from television or in literature?

- 4. Who Done it?! There has been a gruesome murder in your town! Your job is to find the correct suspect by using your detective skills and clues they accidentally give away! Detective Your role is to interview all three suspects and work out who you think the murder is. Look at the suspects body language, are they giving you eye contact? Are they answering your questions without pausing and getting tongue tied? Does their story add up?! Suspects You will receive a character card. On that card will be the details of the suspect you are going to be. One of you is the murderer. DO NOT TELL ANYONE IF YOU ARE THE MURDERER! You must answer the questions the detective asks you. The murderer must try and sound convincing and not look too guilty! The other two suspects must prove they are innocent. You don’t want to go to jail for a crime you didn’t commit!
- 5. A gruesome murder has take place in the quiet village of Unglewood. Mr Davis has been found dead on the village green in the early hours of this morning. He had a fatal head injury and scratches to his face and hands. He was found semi-hidden under a pile of leaves and twigs. Whoever murdered Mr Davis obviously didn’t want to get caught. But they will with Detective Jones on the case…
- 6. Detective Jones You are a very highly respected and admired Detective, who has solved many a gruesome crime over the years. You are not easily fooled and make sure you ask all the right questions to get to the bottom of your tough cases. Miss Rose Barton You are the local Bar Maid in ‘The Red Lion’. You know Mr Davis very well; he was a local at the pub and would often prop up the bar and have friendly chats with you. He sometimes drunk a little too much and recently had been a little too friendly. He did seem to have a strong dislike of Reverend Brown but you have no idea why. The night Mr Davis was murdered you were on your own tidying up in the pub after a long Friday night. You did hear voices being raised around 11pm but you didn’t know where it was or who was involved. You were on you own and therefore have no alibi… Reverend Brown You are the local vicar of the Parish Church. You are a respected member of the community and a favourite with the Women’s Institute. You are a proud captain of the local Bowls Club that Mr Davis was an avid member of. Every now and again you enjoy a little too much to drink at the local ‘Red Lion’ pub where you sit and admire the lovely Miss Barton. Recently Mr Davis was taking a very keen interest in becoming captain at the Bowl’s Club, something you were less than happy about. The night of the murder you were tucked up in bed enjoying a nice nightcap, you therefore have no alibi…
- 7. Mrs Bingle You are a local widow, who has lived in Unglewood your whole life. You enjoy the peace and quiet of the village and strongly disapprove of the sometimes raucous behaviour that happens in ‘The Red Lion’. You are a keen church goer and member of the W.I. Reverend Brown is a close friend and you gloss over his frequent trips to the pub. You did not like Mr Davis because he wanted to tear down a lovely Victorian cottage and build three new flats on the land. The night of the murder you were on your way back from a W.I meeting alone. You therefore have no alibi… Detective Jones. You now have just 5 minutes to interview the suspects and try to find the true murderer…
- 8. Read through the Forensic Fact File and answer the first 10 questions for the competition. Split your group of four into two groups of two in order to answer all ten questions in record speed!
- 9. Forensic Fact File Fighting Crime and catching criminals has been something we have always been very keen on! However, it is only since 1900 that the science of Forensics has been helping the police catch those criminals. It wasn’t until 1901 that fingerprinting was introduced into this country as a way of identifying criminals. Since then lots of biological test have been introduced including using DNA swabs from the inside of suspects mouths, finding their blood groups-either A,B, O or AB, or looking at their clothes fibres under a microscope. Lots of other details are needed by the Forensic and Ballistic crime teams in order to catch those nasty criminals. For instance, if a body is found in soaking wet clothes the Coroner will need to know what the person was doing before their death to rule out any suspicious circumstances. And did you know that every gun leaves a distinct mark on a bullet, so looking at that bullet can tell you exactly what gun was used, and therefore who owns that gun! Glass is one of the most important tools for a detective it is made up of silicates and sodium compounds, and can be used in the form of a magnifying glass to look for hairs (a very common human substance, often found with blood) or in a microscope. It is also very important to think about the location of a crime. If a suspect is escaping a crime committed in a field, they may have traces of pollen and grass on their skin as well as more incriminating evidence. I think most people know what the most famous and indeed popular poison is… Arsenic gets its popularity from the fact that it can’t be detected in the blood stream. It is only detectable by a hair sample and has therefore proved to be very useful for quick, easy murders. So, are you sure you want to drink that free drink?...
- 10. Forensic Fact-File Questions Questions 1-10 on Forensic Fact-File What was fingerprinting first introduced for Criminal identification in Britain? When a DNA test is taken from a suspect in custody, from what part of the body is a sample taken from? Arsenic poisoning is very easily detectable from what part of the body? What might be found on a suspect who has escaped from a farm killing? Classification of blood is divided into what particular groups? If a heavy object is found with congealed blood on it. What else might be found on the object? What would a forensic scientist use to closely examine objects? What are the basic substances that make glass? What does a forensic officer need to know from the Coroner’s report if a body is found in soaking wet clothing? When a bullet is found at the scene of a crime what can the ballistics team identify just by looking at the bullet?
- 11. The Golden Goose Mystery! Read the introduction to the Golden Goose Mystery. Find as many clues as you can from the introduction about the case e.g. ‘Stocky Figure in a tweed coat’ Make a list of what you think the key points are from the story. Working with a partner discuss what you think might have happened in the stable, and try and suggest a motive for murder.
- 12. Begin Planning Using a flow diagram plan your story through to a viable ending. Use the clues that have been given to you in the introduction and don’t forget to make it full of suspense.
