Supercomputers were introduced in the 1960s, and for several decades the fastest were made by Seymour Cray at Control Data Corporation (CDC) The title of world’s fastest computer was held at the time by the IBM 7030 “Stretch,” one of the first to use transistors instead of vacuum tubes.

Performance of a supercomputer is measured in floating point operations per second (FLOPS) instead of million instructions per second (MIPS).
