Concept of urban sustainability
• Physical Sustainability
• Economic Sustainability
• Social Sustainability
• Political Sustainability
Physical Sustainability
Physical sustainability involves the City
developing and management.
They are managed in;
 Environmentally
 Socially
 Economically
Economic Sustainability
• Economic urban sustainability refers to developing cities
and communities in a way that help the long-term
economic well-being.
• It involves creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and
ensuring a stable economy, all while considering the
impact on the environment and social equity.
Social Sustainability
• Social urban sustainability is about creating cities and
creating communities in a way that ensures everyone's
well-being and fairness.
• It means planning and building cities where people can live
healthy, happy lives, with equal opportunities for everyone.
• This includes things like affordable housing, good
healthcare, education, and a sense of community and
making sure that no one is left behind and everyone can
enjoy a good quality of life.
Political sustainability
Political urban sustainability refers to making decisions and
policies in cities that support long-term well-being, fairness,
and good governance. This approach ensures that city
development is fair, ethical, and sustainable and benefiting
everyone.
Issues and Goals of Sustainability
Development
Some common environmental issues in cities and what
sustainability means for them:
 Air Pollution
• Cars and industries release pollutants into the air, affecting our
health and Human Body.
• Encouraging public transportation, cycling, and using cleaner
energy sources reduces air pollution.
 Water Pollution
• Improper disposal of waste pollutes water sources.
• Proper waste management, recycling, and protecting the
water bodies.
 Green Spaces
• Cities can feel too concrete and not have enough parks or
trees.
• Create more parks and green areas to make cities
healthier and more pleasant.
 Over Population
• High population density can stress resources.
• Planning for sustainable population growth,
implementing efficient urban design, and creating
compact, well-connected communities.
Example of Sustainability
Urban Development
One real-life example of
sustainability in urban
development is the city of
Copenhagen, Denmark.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen has been widely recognized for its
commitment to sustainability, and it has implemented
various initiatives to create a more environmentally
friendly and the livable urban environment.
Some key features of Copenhagen's sustainable urban
development include:
 Encouraging Biking
• They constructed lots of lanes for bicycles, so
people can ride bikes instead of driving cars.
• It's good for the environment and People
health and keeps people healthy.
Creating Green Spaces
• They made many parks and many green areas
for people to enjoy and These places help the
city look nice, and they're good for the air.
 Using Clean Energy
• Copenhagen wants to stop using harmful
energy sources. They use a lot of wind power
and other clean energy to run the city.
 Managing Water Well
• They make sure water from rain and rivers
doesn't cause problems. They clean it up and
use it astutely.
 Planning Smart Neighbourhoods
• They design neighborhoods so people can easily walk or
take public transportation. This helps reduce traffic and
pollution.
Having Good Public Transportation
• They have good buses, trains, and a metro system, making
it easy for people to get around without using cars.
THANK YOU!🙂
