INTRODUCTION
 MALKAPUR,
first town with
continuous water
supply scheme
in ASIA
24*7 Water Supply Scheme
 Implemented by MJP and MNP
 Commissioned in 2010
 Koyana river as a perennial source
 5600 connections getting continuous
water supply with110 lpcd
 Sustainable scheme for projected
population of 61000 in 2037
History of Water supply in Malkapur
 Combined water supply scheme for
Malkapur and Nadlapur in 1988 (40 lpcd)
 New scheme for Malkapur in 2005 (55 lpcd)
 24*7 water supply was suggested by MJP in
2006 (75 lpcd)
Additions in the revised scheme
(2006)
 Existing rising mains, pumps and reservoir
 New distribution network
 With HDPE and MDPE pipes
 Automated meter reading (AMR)
 Cost of the project was increased
Assets of the scheme
 Pump (150 HP vertical turbine)
 WTP and twin MBR ( capacity:15 lakh
litre )
 1 GSR ( capacity: 1.5 lakh litre )
 4 ESR
( 2 of capacity 2.5 lakh litre,
1 of capacity 3.75 lakh litre,
1 of capacity 1.5 lakh litre )
Pipe types
 Rising main uses DI (ductile iron) pipes
of 400 mm diameter
 Distribution network has HDPE pipes
 Connections from main line to home
has MDPE pipes
Scheme design parameters
 Rising main and ESRs were designed for 55
lpcd assuming 12 hours of pumping
 Distribution network was designed for 30
years
 ESR capacity was designed for ultimate
stage of 15 years
 Designed for residual pressure of 9m
 Peak factor of 2.5 instead of earlier value of
3
Operational aspects
 Maintained by MNP
 Pump is operated for about 14-16 hours
 Outlet valves of MBR and ESR are
always kept open
 All other valve operations are automated
Automated ESR inlet valve
 Sensors were installed in ESR
 Inlet valve opens partially when water
level drops to 2/3 of ESRs capacity
 Inlet valve opens completely when water
level drops to 1/3 of ESRs capacity
 No need of valveman to operate the
distribution network
Automatic meter reading (AMR)
 AMR meters are installed
for every connection
 Effective water auditing
 Checks excessive usage by
consumers
High Density Polyethylene Pipes
 100m long cables
 Fewer fittings due to pipe flexibility
 Enhanced properties
 Pipes are joined using electrofusion
Cost of water
 Telescopic rates were:
Rs. 4.5/kl upto 12600 litres/month
Rs. 7/kl 12601 to 22500 litres/month
Rs. 10/kl thereafter
 Higher rates for commercial sections
 15% discount for household consuming less
than 55 lpcd
 10% discount for paying bill before due date
 New connections cost Rs.12000
 Free for BPL
Benefits resulting from the project
 Improvement in delivery time and
services
 Less wastage of water
 Electricity savings
 Better water quality
 Reduction in O&M cost
 Simplification of billing procedure
Awards
 ‘Prime Ministers Award for Excellence in
Public Administration’ for the year 2009-10
 ‘National Urban Award’ for the year 2010
Conclusion
The proper & effective combination of high
political will power, successful
Government Machinery & public
contribution, has yielded excellent and
successful 24x7 Water Supply Scheme,
which is a path finder & mile stone for all
water supply schemes which are
proposed to be executed in future.
Thank you
