Africa’s Population
• Story could say it was 1.1 billion in 2013. What does that
tell you? Not much.
• Add the fact that it had been 229 million in 1950.
• WOW!!
• Africa’s population quadrupled in a couple of
generations.
• U.N. Population Division projects Africa will be home to
2.4 billion people in 2050, and 4.2 billion in 2100.
• Now we have a data set.

Key Points
• Data can add drama to your stories and your displays.
• It’s easier to use than ever before, thanks to the Internet and
modern computing tools.
• News organizations around the world not only are using more
data, they also are creating entire “data-driven” beats to mine
treasure troves of numbers for previously untold stories.
Where is the Data?
• Data bases aplenty online, often in spreadsheet format .
• UN and other organizations also offer tools for statistical
analysis.
• Google Public Data Explorer offers not only databases but also
tools for creating visualization. With five clicks you can create
a visualization showing mobile phone subscriptions in your
country, your region or the world from 1960 to the present.
• In Africa, a pioneering model is the Kenya Open Data Initiative.
BE CAREFUL
• Junk Statistics abound on the Internet.
• Unless you know the source, stick with reputable agencies and
sites.
Tips for Using Data
• Numbers like company.
• Numbers call for perspective.
• Check your millions and billions.
• Do the translations.
• Use common sense.
• Back up your own calculations.
Tips for Presenting Data
• Start small, with modest data sets and simple graphics.
• Play with tools online and in your computer software. This is
fun!
• Eventually consider interactive visualizations and infographics.
• Make friends with the graphic experts in your newsroom.
• Consult the publications staffs at research institutions and
universities.
• Don’t forget to credit the sources.
