- 3. Why Drupal? NON-PROPRIETARY Drupal and its supporting software (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP) are open source and free for download. No licensing costs or maintenance agreements. Drupal is one of three content management systems (along with Joomla and WordPress) that dominate the open source market.
